hello well the other day i started my Vr auto v6 wagon and it had a very faint knocking noise on idle so i turned it off checked engine oil and trans fluid and both looked fined good color. so started it up went for a drive and as i took off the noise slowly got louder went around the block and it would not go over second gear by the time i got around the block and back it was a very loud knocking noise.got it home tuned it off and checked the fluids again engine was fine but trany was burnt and gray looking so i started it back to check if i could hear were its coming from and sounds like front of trany the knocking noise starts faint then gets really load over about 10 seconds then stops for 2 seconds then starts over again and as soon as u move throw gears it stops and restarts i have also checked the codes and got 12 im thinking rip it out throw a reco trany in it but would like to see if any 1 could confirm that it is stuffed or if its worth fixing im also thinking could be something like a cracked
flex-plait, loose torque converter or loose pump
loose convertor makes that noise in the past for me. but it never burnt the trans fluid
If the tranny oil is burnt and grey looking I'd reckon for a start the oil will be badly contaminated (grey matter) so that means a full flush plus fix what is wrong etc etc so probably a reco or secondhand box will save time and probably money.

ok so i have started to remove the tranny as i have a reco one on the way and can not seem to get the cast iron cover that covers the toque converter out. anyone know if i have to remove the steering rack to remove this because it seems to be right in the way or is there anther way to get it out
You should just get a workshop manual and follow that.If you cant get a holden one get a gregorys brand manual. These manuals have step by step instructions, you cant go wrong.Well worth it.
