Lately in my car ive been getting a strange noise, originaly i thought it was the transmission, so got it serviced, still had a noise, took it for another drive, and my dad said could be the diff, so had the diff oil replaced, still have the noise
the sound seems to be coming from the back of the car when ever i slow down, could it be the wheel or tail shaft bearings? where not 100% sure but could it be those or something else?
It could be the universal joints on the tailshaft. It could also be the diff bearings are buggered.Id also check the brake discs, the pads and calipers and the handbrake shoes behind the rear brake discs. Also jack it up and spin each rear wheel and feel for any roughness. If the car has done 250000 km or more and you plan on keeping it,then its worth just replacing the rear axle bearings on both sides anyway. The bearings are cheap to buy.You will probably pay more to actually have them fitted.
As Brett says, it could be the iniversal joint at the diff end of the propeller shaft - mine started rumbling recently despite appearing to have no free-play - when disassembled the needles rollers inside the joint were crumbling away. Also check the read brake pads which may be worn down to the metal.
