My 1994 VR Berlina has a couple of leaks under the car, I'm pretty sure it's the rear main seal but not 100%. It's not very much oil just a few drips, most of it lands on the exhaust and just evaporates.
Also there's some tranny fluid on the pan under the tranny, could this be from a leaky seal aswell? pic included sorry bout crappy phone quality
cheers guys
Just look at the colour of the drips,if its red,its auto trans fluid,if its brown or black,it engine oil.Its a bit hard to tell by looking at the pic.It could be either one.
There's oil dripping from that seal infront of the pan and theres some red tranny fluid on the pan thing.
Then the transmission seal is probably stuffed,Id buy a auto transmission filter kit (which comes with a new pan gasket) and change the transmission filter while your at it.Theres also a magnet on the bottom of the transmission pan inside it,it can get filthy if it hasnt been serviced regularly. The filter kit is around $25,and you will also need 5 litres of dexron 111 (3) trans fluid, around $20-$25 as well. The filter should be changed regularly anyway,so its a good time to do it.The engine oil leak is a different story,if its just weeping slightly, then you can try an engine seal rejuvenator, which goes in with the engine oil.Or you can either replace the rear main seal yourself, which has a fair bit of work involved,or pay a mechanic to do it.Id start off by doing the trans filter and gasket. Then degrease everything under there, and then see whats happening from there.Maybe let it idle until you can see where the oil leak is actually coming from.
Also the transmission pan bolts only tighten up to 11Nm,which is not very tight at all really. If you go over this, you risk crushing the new trans pan gasket and causing it to leak again,If you dont have a tension or torque wrench, just nip them all up,and then go around them again to just tighten them a bit more until they are firmly tightened.Just check it for leaks after its been running for a few minutes..
You could also just check that the bolts on the trans pan are tight....not overtight but just tight. The rear main seal usually leaks and this problem is pretty common. Your car is now over 16 years old so you've got to expect a bit of leakage.
