    Default Water Pump Let go

    Hi Guys

The Water pump let go in the VR Yesterday, but not the normal its started to leak or any bearing sounds.
Just driving Down the freeway and heard a loud dink bang sound, car stuttered for a second then drove as normal, but lost power steering etc as the belt flew off as the pump let go. But managed to drive it 5kms to my dads. But biggest issue was i lost the Pully plate that bolts onto the Pump, lucky my father inlaw had a bitser VR. Its not the standard OEM pump cause there is a receipt in the glove box and it was replaced at about 140,000kms, car now has 221,000
Anyway what the hell would cause a pump fail to this degree? No warning at all.
I fixed it with in 2 hours after getting all the new parts and having to get the plate.

nice one!, Obviously the bearings seized and the whole thing spun with the force then and poped it out due to no bearings.

Same happened to me but my temp went straight to red and the high temp alarm sounded so I killed the engine and flat-topped it home. You are very lucky you didn't do damage to the engine.

I think you were very lucky not to damage something.
I have a question say on a 202 motor you could grip the water pump fan blades at east and west and give then a wriggle if you had movement the bearings were RS so get new pump.
So can you do the same test to the pulley on the newer cars????
I`ll go and have a look later it`s raining here atm.

Well all considering think it went as good as it could. Car still ran fine, minus the power steering. and that the pulley did not end up going through something else like the radiator.
The temp alarm did sound basically as i got to my dads, and was only at 3/4s, so it was close to being on H.
I think you do the same thing Pete, If theres any movement just replace them, but i know this pump had no movement as i only checked a little while back. As said gave out with no warning.
Now just waiting to see what the #### goes wrong with the car next, its giving me the shits!
