Im obviously missing something extremley simple here but can anyone explain how teh shift boot retainer on a Vs S2 (leather boot) goes into the console.
The retainer seems to go in perfectly from the underside of the console.
But if its installed from underneath the leather boot doesnt fit, as the leather boot fits as though the retainer is ment to clip in from the top of the console...
It will sit there just not well.
Ill take some photots when i get home to explain better but basically i jsut cant seem to put it together corretly!
If anyone can explain what im doing wrong it would be great !
Some say less talk more action. But I rekon more torque less traction!
Leather boots actually install from the top and not the bottom so that the 90* lip of the plastic retainer sits on top of the console insert. From the underside then, where the retainer now has a side sitting against the lip of the console insert, there is 4 metal clips with little teeth/barbs on them that push over the two pieces to hold them together. This is how they came from factory but many seem to not know this and install from the underside then all it does is fall out like you've found
Doesn't quite show you what you're after, but here's a pic of one installed as above

any idea where i could get some of these said clips? because i installed mine as said but have no clips, so i drilled 4 small holes and installed with little self tappers, works fine, nice and tight.
but id rather the right clips if i could get them
Mines look a little different
Sorry for the shitty pic, iphone.
When i got mine from the previous owner it didnt even stay clipped in so obviously he didnt have it right, how it currently is looks neat and works great, still interested to see a pic from factory of how its meant to look if your offering as yours doesnt look quite stock.
Um, refer to post #2... If you want to see underneath, well, I cbf pulling it apart for no reason other than to prove a point. You can see how it installs from on top, then, on the underside the retainer and console insert are held together with 4 clips that look almost like a mini 'bulldog clip', only without the two squeeze tabs. Each of these 4 clips also has 4 little barbs on them to stop them coming off easily as they bite into the plastic.
Installing the method you have is fine. If you prefer it that way that's great! Only thing is, you'll tend to collect all sorts of cr#p between your vinyl boot and the console insert and, unless your retainer is fixed to the console insert with either some sort of glue or screwed together than if you push down on the retainer it'll simply pop out and then you'll need to remover the console insert each time just to push the boot and retainer back into place.
I was never questioning what you feel to be more aesthetically pleasing, just a statement of fact on how Holden installed them in series II & III VS's.
