My power steering is now leaking again after replacing the seals 12 months ago.It seams a common with some commodores.Has anyone had any luck fixing the problem? Is it just poor quality seals that causes them to fail so quickly?Would fit fitting a small cooler help? Also has anyone done a manual rack conversion to a vr?.
Where is it leaking from? If it's leaking from around the reservoir just replace the hoses or hose clamps. If it's leaking from the threads where the lines join the rack, put some thread sealant on the threads. If it's leaking from somewhere inside the rack you'll have to get it rebuilt.
It's common for the seals to go on commodores because the exhaust manifolds sit so close to the rack causing the seals to get cooked. The problem is worse with some extractors that go both sides of the rack such as pacemakers.
Ours was leaking badly from the pinion seal where the steering wheel shaft enters the rack - added some "power steering stop leak" and it stopped after a fortnight or so. I've had success with the stop leak products on previous cars...last brand I used was Nulon which costs about $14 and cannot do any harm. Compare that with $300+ for a reco rack plus the hassle of getting it done.
A oil cooler only helps if the steering is worked hard like in reversing a caravan and I've never heard of a manual rack or conversion for a VR/VS Commodore.

Did you replace the front shaft seal or just the 2 rear seals? Also there is a oring that needs replacing on the metal high pressure line, most rebuild kits dont come with this, also the bolt at the back of the pump comes undone and has a spring with a seal in it to which should be replaced.
