really it depends on how much u need your car. Its cheaper if u can go without your car for a week or two to get them to pull it out. pull it apart and fix whats wrong. If thats not a go then u need to get yourself either a 2nd hand or a reco transmission. second hand can run to about $600 - $1000, reco fitted is between $2000 and $2500. Secondhand may be cheaper but it may also do exactly the same problem as the original transmission after a month.

My advice is to ring around, prices can vary widely. BTW while they are putting in the reco'd transmission make sure they do the torque converter conversion as thats a design fault of the VS's. And consider getting a transmission with heavy duty banding.

Cool thanks for the helpful info, i have a spare vs ss that has a good transmission in it which hasnt skipped a beat in the 2 years i have owned it, I might pull that out and replace the statesman one as i dont drive the ss as much but then it still brings me to replacing the ss one eventually, i have seen fully rebuilt 4L60E transmission from US for $1000 advertising good up to 600hp which is way beyond my application but im not quite sure if the electrical side of things are compatible with my pcm?

How many k's are on your ss? the transmissions seem to go between 180,000 and 220,000. If your ss is above 180,000k's then i'd avoid swapping them out if u can help it. I would pull the transmission out of the statesmen and rebuild whats wrong with it while driving the ss if thats an option. Fixing the statesmens transmission if you know what your doing could be as little as a hundred dollars up to about $500.

120 thousand kms on the ss, statesman has done 170 thousand kms, I might take it to a couple of transmission specialists tommorow, i just dont know who is good on this particular box in adelaide.

Remember that all 4L60E's are not the same....they have different wiring/bellhousings and some even fit front wheel drive cars. Year to year they will also differ which is why they always put the year of manufacture on the box.

Your spot on, when i looked under the statesman which is 1995 and under the ss which is 1997 the statesman had the speed sensor on the passenger side with a different plug on the loom, the ss one had the speed sensor on the drivers side but this was easily fixed by changing the snout that bolts up to the back of the transmission. got the transmission in yesterday and it drives and shifts smooth once again, now i have to take the blown box to a transmission specialist and hopefully they dont slug me too much to get 2nd gear fixed
