Hi all, I know there are several other posts about this (which i have read) but I want to make sure that my case is the same.
I have just finished installing a set of Monroe GT Gas shocks (brand new) and a set of King Springs (Lows) in the front of the car.
Since installing them there is a knocking sound coming from the front right of the car, the left hand side is fine.
At first I thought it was due to the sway bar link top nut not being done up (my bad!) but the noise is still there afterwards.
Next step is to buy some nolathane bushes for the sway bar links. But if it was the sway bar links then wouldnt the other side give the same noise?
The other option is to pull the front strut apart and re-do it from scratch incase I missed something. (although it was put together in the same way as the left hand side strut)
Also, with what I have done in terms of lowering it, do i need shorter sway bar links? (stupid question i know but i just want to be doubly sure!)
Any help would be great!
It may pay to remove said strut & make sure the nuts at the top of the strut mount are tight. If you've not torqued one or both correctly (as was the case with the s/bar link), you may have missed another. If all other components are in working order, nothing sould produce such a noise. Shorter sway bar links are not required.
I had a similar problem turned out the buses on the sway bar link had cracked and pulled through, it sounded like a knock/crunching noise
I was told that on the plate above the spring there is a cut-out "V" . it should face a certain way . check with someone with some knowledge of this.
The spring in your case may not be set in properly .
I had this problem Before I lowered My VT .
cheers guys!
I was working on it till midnight last night trying to figure it out.
I will pull out the strut again today and double check that. When I tested the rattle gun on the left hand strut the top plate did not move, however with the right one it twisted around with the nut and the strut centre. My guess is that is where the problem lies!
All the sway bar links are done up as far as they will go (out of thread) which i thought was strange.
I will probably get some new bushes today anyway - might be a good time to renew them anyway.
I will post back with the results!
All sweet now!
BD33VU, you were spot on mate. I thought I had done the top strut nuts up tight enough, but aparently not. I attacked it with my rattle gun and made sure it was done up tight as. And what do you know, no knocking sound!
Just for reference the top plate on the strut (under the first nut) should not turn when doing anything up, it should be solid.
Thanks again guys! I knew it was going to be a simple fix.
I would Recomend you undo the sway bar links a bit for doing them up so tight you will no doubt snap the link pin thought i would just say so before to late (Sadly i had the problem of doing the links up to tight) and snapped it clean
