Got my car serviced today, and managed to track down the source of the oil leak I have, apprantly its from the oil pump.
Now I've been told by my mechanic that these are really quite tricky to get right, and you dont want to rush it. He also said hes hoping he can fix it with just a kit, but worst case scenario it will have to have the new pump and I'm looking at around $530.
Does this sounds right, can anyone else shed some light on this for me please?
Just to clarify, are you referring to the engine oil pump or the power steering oil pump?
engine oil pump mate
A new engine oil pump is around $150-200, and for a V8, is quite a simple replacement. The only tricky bit is to ensure that the pump is primed properly when it is installed. $530 seems an excessive amount to me but others may be in a better position to comment.
oil pumps can be pricey depending who you know and can get trade 150-200 is a very good price. Personally ring an auto parts store and ask for a price (dont ring holden they told me you cant buy them anymore) then you can see if the mech is talking shit
$530 with labour included you would be happy with.
!st thing to check is the leak may be from the oil pressure sensor on the oil pump. or even can be just a gasket neither these are difficult to fix and could not see them costing a lot.
Rebuilding the pump shouldnt be necessary unless your not getting enough pressure. The only other way itd leak is if the housing is cracked which happens occasionallly which means the whole pump would need replacing anyway.
theres nothing difficult to removing/replacing the pump so i dont know what mechanic is talking about any compentant mechanic shouldn't say that. As stated the above the hardest part is getting oil pressure up straight away. Unless you ended up having what happened to morton happen to you

Pub247 what happened to morton? I'm not following?
the driveshaft of his oil pump broke off when he removed the pump and he was unable to remove ended requiring removal of timing cover. I got him a replacement pump for $152 which was cost through my work and was about half what bursons quoted him.
