I'm pretty sure I have a cracked head cylinder in my 95 vr wagon, does anyone have an idea on roughly how much it will cost to fix.
you would need to find out how much you can get exchange heads for
then vrs kit
etc etc etc many parts involved
would recomend getting aa manual on the motor and decide if you do it yourself after reading how to
else ring around and get the cheapest qaute near you
as different shops charge diffferent amounts its hard to say
vr v6 replace two heads is about 3500 at a dealer lube mobile do it at your door for about 2800 but these prices are old and may have changed since last i used someone else to do these jobs for me!~
what symptons are you getting, might just be a blown head gasket. vn to vr engines are pretty hard to crack being cast iron on cast iron. alloy heads on cast are a shit load easier to crack
For a couple of months we have had to top up the coolant pretty much everyday, it has trouble starting and I need to put my foot on the accelerator after turning the key to keep it going or it conks out.
Sounds more like a leaky inlet manifold...either the gasket or the manifold alloy corroded. As a stop-gap measure try some chemi-weld or similar stop leak product - this will slow it down till Xmas is over.
Re the heads, if it were both heads gone which is very rare and usually the result of a very overheated engine, you'd be best with another motor or heads from a wrecker for about $100 ea plus gaskets for a similar amount.

Shit time for me to get back on the tools - I just got a quote - trade of course - All Head services - two heads / gaskets & bolts from USA for under $900 landed at my door in bundy inc freight up & back to Melbourne....Repco was $350 per head plus $50 freight...I used to fit reconditioned motors for $3500 5 years ago...
true like i said prices have changed
exchange heads are still normally the cheapest option
but like i said a lot of people just do the gaskets and the bolts
if you check everything over when you have it apart and is ok (which most of the time it is as stated above cast iron not alloy)
then repair is reletively cheap just time consuming
chemi weld will work for a while but has a bad habit of sealing off more than the leak.. if you use chemi weld
you have to be very careful to use it the way it says on the bottle if you just tip it all in at once it can cause a blockage
Pull dipstick out and check if it has a milky residue on it, like a caramel colour, if so you've got a blown head gasket. You can also remove each spark plug one by one. Check for rust deposits on tips of plugs, this too is an indication of a faulty head gasket and the corresponding rusty plug will indicate where gasket is blown. As mentioned above, these are cast iron heads and rarely fail/crack unless severely overheated. Good luck!
it was rooted cam bearing, didnt bother pulling it apart, baught a unreg sedan motor came out today mine comes out tomorrow, hopefully get car back boxing day...$800 later
