Battery light has come on and off ever since I got the darn VR. Yesterday she died, jump start and she was ok. Today swapped the battery, was fine until I was broken down on the M5. So am changing the alternator tomorrow, plan to put the one from my VN (has a VR motor) on the VR.
1. Do we have a how to for this? I can't really find anything..
2. The alternator on the VN used to over charge and leave white oxidization around the negative battery terminal.. Will this be ok to use in the VR?
First of all you can get grease to prevent that oxidisation. Make sure it's the alternator, start it up and measure the volts across the battery terminals. If it's 14v it's good, if it's 12v the alternator is dead.
Most problems with the alternator are due to the bushes in the voltage regulator wearing down. A replacement voltage regulator is cheap and replacement is quick and easy. Do a search on voltage+regulator.
