Nothing... it should hold itself on the lip all the way around...

just had a look at the seal and it is not one piece, so where should i place the meet up should it be down near the boot latch.

Yeah,put the join in the seal at the boot lock.Less chance of leaking there.The original seals are 1 piece,well mine is anyway.I remove mine every now and then to clean around and under it..
