Default VS3 V6 UTE - Front Disc Rotors

    Hey

I just rang lube mobile to enquire how much to supply and install 2 new disc brake rotors for the front, and they say that the fronts are larger than the rear. Is this a load of crap or is right? As the price for the job is way more than what they previously charged me when they did my rears.

I just know from previous experience its not always good to accept what they tell you, especially when previously when I did the rears it was only until I called back did I get a good price (ie saying I could get it done cheaper with a competitior).

Anyway just thought I'd ask to see how true this is to make sure they aren't making up crap to rip me off.

The exact model of the car is 1999 Holden Commodore VS3 UTE.

    Thanks

Yes they are larger but are easier than the rear... took me 5hrs on a weekend to do mine with plenty of beerstops in between. So by my reckoning it should only take a couple of hours for an experienced mechanic

1). WD40 the Callipers & the front/Rear of the rotors
2). Undo the calliper and hang it up with some wire on the spring.
3). With a Rubber mallet, tap the rotor and it will come off(If it doesn’t use more WD40, have a couple of beers and give it an hour...) try again.
4). Push back the pistons in the callipers(take note of the Brake fluid as it could overflow)...
5). Optional but I would recommend is to use new pads.
    6). Reverse the process.

P.S Use Lock tight on the calliper bolts... when putting them back in.

An experienced mechanic should take about 30-45 minutes to do front rotors on a VS.

I can supply slotted front rotors for $165 a set.

Ok I got another quote from another mobile mechanic, and they quoted significantly less than Lube mobile. So I'm going with them. Basically Lubemobile wanted $412 and this other mobile mechanic is able to do it for $323. I got my rears done (new rotors and pads) for $292 in Oct, so being that the fronts are indeed larger I'm willing to be a a bit more but not like $412 more .

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Cool, that's an OK price.... anal-Lubemobile tends to overprice on the labour a bit too much for me.

New pads should always be fitted to new rotors so they bed in correctly.

Actually the rear rotors are more expensive that the front for 2 reasons - first is that they have a brake drum formed as part of the rotor for the handbrake so the actual disc costs more, and second, the labour cost in changing the rear rotor is much greater than the front rotor as the handbrake shoes need to be removed/reinstalled/adjusted.

Thats not what I've found, my front brakes cost more to do than the rears.

    Fronts - 323
    Rears - 292

Brake service = new rotors, new pads supplied and installed.
