just put new motor in, now shorting out and not getting power?? terminal sparking...

me and a mate finally put the new motor into my VS wagon, used the old loom which was fine now its all bolted in and connected up to everything but whenever i go to put the negative terminal on the battery it sparks and makes smoke wont make any power. ive been told its shorting out somewere but am not too sure. anybody know where to check?

obviously only you would know what got unplugged and replugged back in, so youve checked everything in the engine bay? Next step after that is taking fuses out till it stops doing it
