Should be clean and dry in there no grease or similar subtances.

Try cleaning it up and testing brake light again.

My VS has the same grease type stuff inside all the rear bulb sockets..Id say its put there to help stop corrosion between the bulb and the bulb holder.

All the one's I've seen have white grease in them as Brett says. I'd also check you've installed the correct bulb - it's common for people to install the wrong one - check the other side to make sure you are using the correct bulb.

I have the same problem, though its intermittent, if i jiggle the globe a bit i get my brake light back but after a few days i lose it again.

Corrosion could be the problem, if you're handy with a soldering iron you could cut off the holder and solder in another one and see if that one works well.

What i would be doing is, cutting off the entire holder, by cutting the three wires which attach to it, and then soldering in another one. The holder can be opened up and have a new holder put on without cutting any wires but that might be a bit harder to do.
