Hey guys,
I just picked up a VR 5L Ute and was wondering what the law is with the exhaust dumped at the diff (previous owner did it).
I have heard that the exhaust must be behind the rear most opening window in a sedan but am unsure about utes. I have also heard that it must be behind the diff on a Ute so i may have already answered my own question.
Can anyone clear it up for me? Would it pass a roadworthy with the current exhaust setup?
Cheers guys
It wont pass roadworthy, because the exhaust must exit from under the car. I can come out infront of the rear wheel with the utes, but it must exit.
I should of just PM'd you! That WAS quick, Cheers mate
Kudo's for asking a different exhaust question. It was 50/50 whether or not you were going to loose your head LOL!
Haha, there's 50,000 exhaust threads asking the same damn thing (What size ect ect). I've been getting sick of seeing them![]()
Yours is different for a change!
10pts to you.
Ummm....that is not actually correct as far as Commodore utes are concerned.
An exhaust must exit past the rear most welded body seam, as the tub and the body are a continuous panel, the rear most seam is at the rear of the vehicle, so the exhaust must exit at the rear.
As a Ford ute has the tub and cab separate, technically it can exit out the side in front of the wheel, but as it is not really a commercial vehicle it has to exit after the rear axle.
Fair cop.
So for 1tonners what I said applies ( which is probably why I've only ever seen one tonners with this applied.)
They must have changed the laws, or it might be different from state to state. In Victoria is used to be Xmm from the last opening of the vehicle.
I.e door or window. Which is how coupe's used to get away with sidepipes. (LOONG Time ago).
And yes, I am hiding under your car....and you bed.
We ALL HAVE 1 THING IN COMMON:THE RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF GRIP
Interesting info at the start, last part is just creepy.....
Spoke to another mechanic today and he claims I will get away with a dump pipe straight to the ground just after the diff. I will probably bang on another exhaust out the back of the vehicle anyway.
What are the reasons behind a dumped exhaust being illegal? Is it because the fumes may find its way back into the cab somehow or am i missing other reasons completely?
That and its a fire hazzard and loud as hell.
$50 you wont get away with the dumped exhaust too.
My vl had a 307 and was dumped after the diff in Qld never again way to loud
