G'day.
I'm having what I perceive as a slight problem with my V6 VR(Either that or I am paranoid) with high oil consumption. On a recent trip from Newcastle to Melbourne (1134km) my engine managed to consume a bit of oil (I refilled it her place, put in about 1 litre?)
On the return journey I had to refill with another litre or so of oil. Just recently, with trips to and from Western Sydney (400km approx per round trip, approx 2400km total) my motor seems to be chewing oil (I've had to refill it twice so far. One with 2L and the other with probably 500ml).
The motor has no leaks, and there is no oil in the radiator since I only just flushed that out. I've been using HPR 30 as my oil of choice and I thought I may have chose the wrong viscosity.
On perhaps a related note, since the high oil consumption sometimes went a few KM without oil retreatment, my motor now sometimes has a slight ticking sound when I first start it. Could I have damaged the lifters or something during this?
The ticking on start up is no oil up the top of the engine, so to speak. Stops once the oil pressure is up.
Does it blow smoke?
How many k's on the clock? I had a VH that used a bit of oil too, but it had a heap of k's on it.
An old motor will use some oil, even my 130,000 k VY uses around 50-100 ml every 6-7,000. Maybe switch to a slightly heavier oil?
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Yeah going by the k's posted above, plus vehicle age, I'd imagine it's got a lot of k's on it.
You could try a heavier weight oil. That will stay thicker when hot, but it depends where the oil is going. My guess is it's just a tired motor and it's burning it. ie: Oil is getting into the combustion chamber past the rings.
Comes with old age, a little leaky here and there, odd gasses getting released from the arse end. Was it 167,000K's 5 years ago?
Try a thicker oil like that Shell stuff 'for older engines' or something similar http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...215337#details
How long have you been running penrite oil?? if you have only just changed recently that is normal, penrite oil will unseal an engine that has not had it run in it before, and after approx 1 to 2 months it will seal up again.
THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH EVERY CAR I HAVE BOUGHT AND CHANGED TO PENRITE OILS, they use oil for the first 1to2 months then will seal up and not use a drop.
I have a vs ecotec with 300,000 on the clock running penrite and does not use a drop between changes.and yes it is the original engine.

No more V8'S, GT35 TO GO ON SOON
If you need to go to a heavier oil use a penrite oil, maybe hpr50 it is good oil.

I use penrite HPR15,which is a semi synthetic 15W-60 oil in my VS ecotec thats got around 150,000 km on it..This oil stays a bit thicker at high temperatures, but is still thin at low temps so the oil still gets around the engine quickly at cold startup.
I've only been using it actively for a month or so. I say actively because when I first put it in, I didn't use the car for a month or so.
Just out of curiousity, how much does it cost to get a motor reconditioned these days? Can anybody recommend a spot in Newcastle area? Willing to drive to Sydney if I have to.

Would be good to know, My VX after 10,000kms the oil is in between the Add and Full mark. I use 10-30, Maybe i should switch to thicker stuff.
