Having a starter problem that is really getting to me, can't for the life of me figure it out.
Now this is a new starter motor.
Go to start the car, it cranks over a little like normal, then a wrenching sound (like the car was about to kick over) and stops... now the starter is stuck. out with a hammer and give it some love taps, try to start, nothing, more love taps, turns over a little then wrenching sound, stuck... repeat until the bastard starts.
this is getting just a tad annoying.
back story... initially I had a starter that was dying for a while and I let it slide, then it degraded to the point where it wasn't disengaging when running and making a hell of a racket. this prompted me to change it.
swapped it for a 2nd hand one, worked fine for a while then started getting stuck. after a while I thought oh well get a new starter... worked well for a while, then started getting stuck...
So I'm tending to lean towards it not being a problem with the starter itself.. but buggered if I know what is actually wrong.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Check the teeth on the flywheel.
did that when I changed the rear main seal, seemed fine to me, although covered in crustied up coolant crud, which I cleaned up.
but it was happening before and after this.
is there a shim between the starter and the block some have a shim some dont shim will move the teeth slightly further out of mesh
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
nothing relating to starter in error codes. only stupid ones because i'm running gas.
V6 or 8 If its a V8 is it the correct starter? The wrong one will cause exccess engagment.
its a v6.
i'll have to pull off the flexplate cover and stick my head under there while someone starts the car so i can have a good look at what is going on.
fun times.
the shim will be missing binding up the teeth ide say

1/2 - 1mm just a sheet metal shim the shape of the starter with 2 holes in it

i agree with delcowizzid,
recently i did a gearbox conversion, and the starter from the doner car needed a shim, but i never got it.
got a friend to crank it with my under it and saw it was hitting the flywheel before it got to engage.
just as a quick test i got 2 thin washers and put em in behind the bolts. and no problems. (i made the proper shim the next day)
but when my starter packed it in... i went to get a reco one and that was shimless so just bolted straight on.
this is for manual i dunknow about autos they are bosh mine is a delco
i reckon you two might be right. have done a little research and this makes the most sense.
just hope I haven't screwed up the new starter too much from it binding up and me giving it 'love taps'
cheers delcowizzid and hdtkid, will have a look this arvo and hopefully all is well.
check the crank angle censor
"love taps" on the new reduction drive starters, breaks the permanent magnets in the starter fields.....So be carefull.
well, although this is going to make me look extremely stupid...
turns out it was just a loose earth lead to the starter
I discovered this only after taking off the flexplate cover to look at the 'stuck' starter, realising that it wasn't stuck at all. jiggled the earth lead a bit, and away she went.
guess this just reinforces that old addage, "check the simple things first".
