hi all i want to convert my 94 vr 355 from efi to carby has anyone done this.
i think you're confused.
you'd want to convert from carby to efi.
Any reason why you would want to go back to a Carby? I think it will be illegal due to emission laws.
However you can get Fuel Injection Carby setups if you want to down this path.
Yours Kindly,
Jim
Efi never sound the same to carby, I'm buyin a bs senator with dual 1000 Efi style demon carbs,,, sounds heaps better to when it was a full Efi 355
i had aVG ute long ago with a 355ci Stroker,we ran a carby. Not sure what the rules are now,but as long as we had the same or less emissions as the EFI setup,it was fine. But thats prob changed of late

Want to register it?? Then you have to stay EFI or pass the incredibly expensive epa tests that prove your car produces less polution than it would if it were efi (almost an impossible task).
But hell if you dont want to register it you should be sweet a blue carby manifold should fit I think then just put of an appropriate sized carb. Along with getting rid of any unneccisary efi hardware of course/
vr is lic as v8 not worried about emission laws how would i wire it up
Agreed.
Dreamers.
i just want to know has anyone done this conversion before and whats involved like do you have to keep the ecu for the dash as im got are level 3 dash mines are manual so i don't need to worry about controlling the auto
Interesting concept, electric shifting box with a Carby setup that doesn't require an ECU?
The VRs were the first of electronic shifts.
You would need to look out getting a gear box out of a VN/VP to do Carby or go Manual.
Then you have to do a transition between your speed sensor, revs to your dash, unless you put in a custom dash which would look cool to match your custom build.
I seriously think you are going to have issues with emission laws, Full on Carby on a model that was brought out with EFI, in N.S.W. I couldn't see that happening as I said before you can get EFI carby setups.
Good luck with your project.
Yours Kindly,
Jim
YOU CANT LEGALLY DO IT.
There is a good reason Holden went to EFI.
It will cost you about $2000 to do it and then you wont be able to drive it on the road.
I remember someone asking about putting a carb on a VN V6 because they came out on earlier models in the states and someone saying that the fines can go up to $10000 for tapering with emissions if caught?
Good luck anyways!

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
i did it in my VG ute(note-this was in QLD).yes it is possible, and yes,it cost a paycheck to get it passed.Hell, there is a VS V8 Calais up here, that runs a carby with filter thru bonnet. And before anyone says "don't you know the difference between TBI & Carby",this thing IS A CARBY,fully registerd.you can legally do it,if you have the money and time to do it BY THE BOOK.
When i looked to do it to the ute,Engineer at the DOT Qld said it only had to meet GMH Emissions for that size motor (EFI 5Ltr),or put out less emissions then then the stock 5ltr(we went off VN 5ltr emssions card).
I also put twin cats on the ute aswell,so it is possible, yes it will cost a bit,but really, who gives a S%^t,as i work on drill rigs for a living, and i can do what ever i want(specially after someone says its not possible)

I agree,a carburettor will never give the same or better emissions as EFI will,so it will never pass emissions tests to pass rego.I know of people who have looked into this before (in NSW anyway),and its just not legal.Youve only gotta look at the pollution gear fitted to a VL commodore compared to a VN,on the VL theres pollution gear systems everywhere, the EFI -and full engine management was responsible for way less pollution equipment being used on the VN.It just shows how clean the EFI engines run with full engine management.

it would be possible if you put it on straight gas
Its bloody impossible to tune to the same emissions or less than efi - thats why we have it to pass emissions testing - maybe if you went down the path of E85 you might have a chance. The problem is today that everything is going electronic & relying on the sensors for all sorts of things. The auto relies on the engine sensors includeing throttlebody - so a gearbox replacement would just be the start - it would cost a lot more than 2k as well - shakes head ...
Like I said you cannot tune a motor to the same emissions as EFI - you do not have the control over mixtures - that is why they have EFI because it gives them greater control than a carb & dizzy - doesnt matter if it is a manual. If you had to do an emissions test "properly" you would fail every time - why do you think manufacturers spent millions of dollars developing this stuff - not for fun I can assure you
Yes it does matter that its manual, you were going on about how the auto trans needs a TPS and everything to function correctly. But its manual. So it doesnt.
Im not sure what kind of conditions the emissions tests are done over there, but I suggest OP borrows/buys an exhaust gas analyzer and winds the idle mixture right back till the carbon monoxide % is low enough to pass. Doesnt matter if it runs shit or is completely gutless, he can retune it after the test.
good luck getting carby to run as clean as EFI. Its possible sure. But so is traveling to mars.
It will fail straight up on evaporative emissions - but give it a go - all this for a sound..... OMG
