Yeah the MAF could definitely cause this. If it doesn't know how much air is going in than it ain't going to go so well.

Code 23 is Air Temperature Sensor.

    AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR
    CODES 23,25,26

    Codes 23, 25
    1. Disconnect the air temperature sensor wiring harness.
    2. With the ignition On, check the voltage between the harness connector terminals.
If the voltage is not approximately 5 volts, check the wiring between the ECU and the air temperature sensor for continuity and shorts. If no fault can be found, renew the ECU.
    3. Check the resistence between the sensor terminals, and compare to Specifications.

    Air temperature sensor resistence:
    At -5°C...........................12.414 k/ohms
    At 10°C............................5.729 k/ohms
    At 20°C............................3.555 k/ohms
    At 30°C............................2.268 k/ohms
    At 40°C............................1.483 k/ohms
    At 70°C............................0.475 k/ohms
    At 90°C............................0.245 k/ohms
    At 100°C..........................0.180 k/ohms
    At 110°C..........................0.135 k/ohms

    AIR FLOW SENSOR (CODE 32)
    1. Disconnect the air flow sensor wiring harness and check the voltage at the harness connector terminals A and C. There should be battery voltage at Terminal C and 4-6 volts at Terminal A.
    2. If the voltage is not correct at terminal C, check fuse No. 33 and the associated wiring.
    3. If the voltage is not correct at terminal A, check the wiring between the air flow sensor and the ECU terminal D1 for continuity and shorts. Renew the ECU if no fault can be found.
    4. Check for continuity to earth at the air flow sensor harness connector terminal B and the ECU connector terminal A1.
    5. Ensure the air flow sensor wiring harness is routed clear of the high tension leads. If all other components are satisfactory and the codes reset, renew the air flow sensor.

Problem fixed it turned out to be the MAF even though it was doing a good impression of a bent valve/push rod or worn cam lobes
