Hey all, just wondering if a VR diff centre (is IRS) will go into a VS diff(Live axle)? Any help appreciated!
Yes it will. Don't mix and match your crownwheel and pinion gears though as they need to remain together as a mated pair. Backlash shimming between the gear mesh will need to be re-adjusted once you swap the centre. Also be aware that the 8? bolts that hold the crownwheel to the centre are LEFT hand thread.
Cheers.
Thanks for that! Now how do i get the drain bolt out of the Vs diff??Either way i try turn it, it wont move more than half a turn??? All the other bolts crscked nicely but this one just wont budge....
noob question, how do you tell the difference between live and solid?
#### i suck with drivetrain and diff -_- great with engine though hahahah

Kioes, live and solid are the same thing. IRS is the type with diff bolted to the body and axles with cv joints at both ends of the drive shafts like front wheel drive cars
ahhh thanks heaps mate! that clears up alot, haha i need to widen my knowledge on stuff like that, if it was to do with my engine no problems hahahah

hey, thanks for replies. No sign of damage! Bolt ended up coming out with a little persuasion. Changed oil, diff still whines? Could this have anything to do with drive shafts at all????
Did you replace the diff centre carrier bearings aswell while you had it apart? The whine is possibly coming from the gears themself. How many kms have they done? May also need to look at outer axle bearings and tailshaft centre bearing.
Nah was hoping it was just out of oil. No luck there, it had heaps although it was black as hell and stunk bad! gonna have to look at bearings etc i think? Speedo says car has done just over 200 thou. Ther was bugger all metal shrapnel in the old oil though.
Yeah thats typical used diff oil characteristics. That stuff sure stinks! Worse than used auto oil too. What grade of oil did you fill it with? A slightly heavier grade will help to quieten it down if it is the crownwheel and pinion gears as the source of the noise. Probably a cheaper and easier option to try before doing bearings. The carrier and axle bearing need to be pressed on and are approx $40 each.
