    Default VS Problems - HELP!!

whenever i am driving, i get a thump when i try to accelerate until it clicks down into 3. it mostly happens when i am on the freeway going from 80 --> 100, it will thump, thump, thump then click down, hestitate then away it goes. ive taken it to the mechanic, and they couldn't find anything, they just replaced the thermostat, which has made the thump softer. it only appears to happen when its warmed up.

    its a 96 vs acclaim.

    HELP PLEASE!!

    Cheers.

Theres obvoiusly a problem there somewhere if its doing that.Id take it to another DIFFERENT mechanic and get them to inspect it to find whats wrong, and also get them to give you a quote on the price they would charge to fix it.Then post up on here what theyve found wrong, and the price theyve quoted you to fix it, and we can then tell you if its a decent quote for whatever job it may be.Did the last mechanic charge you at all to tell you theres "nothing wrong"?

$25 is very cheap! Re the thump, it's probably transmission related...possibly the torque converter clutch not unlocking due to the TCC solenoid failing....so you may be better off seeing a transmission specialist - ask around for a reputable one.
From your fault description it's hard to see how they said the thermostat was at fault?
Attached is a trans fault link.

Is there a code stored in the computer?
Sounds like either the clutch control for the converter or the converter itself.

    Hi,

I had a problem similar to this, but it happened only when cruising, you could feel a thump in the drive-line.
It turned out to be engine misfiring from bad DFI/Coils !

thats what my new mechanic reckons, he also suggested plugs, leads, and the coils. he doesnt reckon it could be the gearbox, as i just had it serviced....

my car fails at being a car.

It's hard to say. A gearbox "Service" Does not magically fix all gearbox related problems, so it requires some good diagnostic skills.
But that being said I'm just leaning toward coils/leads/dfi/plugs for some reason it's worth a try if you can find a VS that runs good and just swap them over.
It was the last thing on my mind as I could "feel" it in the drivetrain, but it was actually engine misfiring.

lol what's the thermostat got to do with it??

+1 for coils, plugs, leads - they can cause a thump if the spark is crappy. do you know how old your plugs/leads are?

+2 for coils, plugs and leads. My VS was doing something similar when I bought it. I put in new leads and plugs and the problem went away. Relatively cheap to try. If it doesn't fix it, you really haven't lost much.
