    Default 95 VS Auto only has 1 & 2 no 3 & 4 gears

I've got a 95 VS sedan with 325,000Km on the clock. Today she lost 3rd and 4th gears. No noise no indication of anything wrong it just won't change from 2 to 3. I've tried shifting manually but with no change. I've checked the codes and have nothing but 12 displayed. I reset the computer just in case but no change again. As the ATF was brownish I have changed the oil and filter. While I had the pan off checked the wiring connectors on all solenoids but could not see any issues.

Any ideas? My guess is the 2-3 solenoid but am confused by the lack of codes.

What price range are 2nd hand boxes roughly? A rebuild is out of the price range at this time.

    Thanks

    Wardie

$350 to $500 should get you a good box from a wrecker with a months warranty. It should have left a code if the engine light came on....did it? Also see: 4l60e Problems and Solutions - S-10 Forum

Thanks for the price indication, hako.

No Check light. Have checked codes and only get a 12. I have checked the S-10 link and see that they suggest the 3-4 clutches are worn out. I don't know about this as there is no shift into 3rd. I'd assume that if it was the clutches then it would shift and then rev as the clutches slip. In my case I can rev it past 3-4K RPM but it will not change up when I ease off the throttle. Currently we are traveling at 60Kmh @3K rpm

Maybe the ECU has the fault, this will not set a code. can you substitute a VS auto ecu to test?

To test the box if it is working disconnect the wiring loom, this will send it into limp home mode locking it into 2nd or 3rd via the shift stick.

That sounds like a good test!....but my limited electrical knowledge tells me that the car won't run if the ECU isn't plugged in...but I'll admit I could be wrong???

Edit....I read your post again and again and you must mean to disconnect the wiring loom from the transmission....not the wiring loom from the ECU. Call me dumb.

Unfortunately the wrecker who I approached to borrow/test an ECU basically said "Money up front - No refunds" Even offered to leave wife and kids while I road tested it but he couldn't be swayed.

I'm on the Central Coast, NSW. Does any one have a trusted transmission place that I could discuss the problem with?

hey mate, sounds to me like a shift solinoid, they can still register in some cases to the ecu as per normal, hense no flash codes, $45 dollars off of ebay will buy you a brand spanker.
i would say replace both just so you cant get it wrong. one of those solinoids controls 1st n 2nd, the other 3rd 4th. then 15bux for a tranny sump gasket. also seeings how the atf was burnt, probably wouldnt hurt to change the oil again to give it a good flush out.

Sorry but does not sound like A and B shift solenoids to me as they have to switch on and off to select 1st and 2nd, sounds like they are working to me.

    Found this in another thread.

This does indicate that the 2-3 solenoid sticking would cause the fault. I'm assuming that a blown solenoid would post a fault code but if it's just stuck then maybe not. Going to try to source a 2nd hand one to try before ordering a new one.

you can get them for about $35 a pair delivered from US ebay sellers, I know because I just replaced mine.

FYI A and B are identical so you can swap them as a pair if you wish to test it that way.

Be real gentile with the electrical connectors, they get brittle with age in the trans fluid, if you break one they will still connect but I used zip ties to hold them in place (i broke mine being careful) or you can fork out the $100pluss for a new wiring loom...

I manged to pick up an old VS box (parts only) for $40 today and a 2nd hand TPS. Pulled out the 1-2 & 3-4 solenoids and metered them - OK. Swapped the TPS and both solenoids. Ended up snapping off the tabs on the plugs even though I was careful as, so had to cable tie them to the solenoid. Took it for a drive - still no 2 - 3 change.

Kind of stumped now. I'm going to pull the 10A transmission fuse tomorrow to see if I can force Limp Home mode (3rd gear). If this works then the 3-4 clutch pack is OK.

I'm not going to have the scratch until next weekend at the earliest. I'll see if you still have it then, if not then that's Ok. At least my wife can still drop the junior Tin Lid off at school using 1 & 2.

Got Crewies spare box on Sat and worked all weekend to get it in. Fail!!!!!

Gave up at lunch today still trying to get the prop shaft out. Broke 3 x 14mm ring spanners on one of the 4 bolts holding the rear uni to the diff and eventually rounded off the friggin head. After having a serious dummy spit, I put it all back together again just before the heavy rain hit.

At least I know that it is not the ECU as we tried Crewie's spare with no change to the issue.

Thanks mate, I might take you up on that but will let you know later as I don't know if I'll have to work next weekend.

When I left I had to stop and restart it a little bit up the road and then she ran on all pots. I think that the original ECU fouled a plug temporarily. Hasn't played up since.

Finally got the box fitted after breaking another spanner and having to grind off that bolt on the prop shaft. Who ever built this bloody car never read the manual re torque settings. I bent a 19mm ring spanner trying to loosen one of the engine to gearbox bolts.

I took it for a road test last night and it's a totally different car. I never realised how bad it had become prior to loosing 3 & 4. Cruising on the Freeway at the speed limit @2000rpm instead of 2500rpm+.

Thanks Crewie for the good box.
