ok start ya car & check the dip stick for the auto & see how much transmission fluid you have if its on the full mark check what colour the fluid is if its red good if its brown or black
thats not good but if ya not to cluey on things like this take it to a good automatic transmission specialist it may need a good service

Mine had this problem, Would also backfire on gas, There was a sensor near the Crank that was Cracked ( not the crank angle sensor ) that was the problem. When i asked about it everyone said TPS so that could also be the case.
    Hope this helped and Goodluck!

As Vsl67 says it classic Throttle Position Sensor failure...the auto thinks the throttle is still closed when it's fully open - about $60 to replace. Re the fluid colour - it should stay red till the bands/clutches slip and overheat enough to burn it....mine is still red 100,000km after overhaul which tells me it's still tight, but once it goes brown it will be a sign that it's getting worn again.

Hako is 100% correct, a correctly working auto should keep its fluid cherry red and smelling wonderfull, often the transmission fluid will smell "burn't" before it loses it's color.

The throttle position sensore is easy to change and to obtain, I suggest buying a Gregory's or a Haynes manual from your local auto shop. Remember to keep your auto running perfectly for longer, service it every 20 thousand, its not a difficult job and doesn't cost much either.

It probably means your transmission is about to fail....which means you will be sitting on the side of the road. To avoid this, you need to decide if you are just going to drive it till it dies, or drain and flush the atf with a new filter and a can of trans no slip and hope that this will delay the day it dies or finally, go to a trans shop and get their advice, which will be that you need a reco trans...$2000 or thereabouts.
The more you drive it the worse it will get as the slipping overheats the oil which then degrades the oil etc.....
Mine failed 1500km from home, and it wasn't a pleasant experience.
    Good Luck.

firstly, check/replace your CAS (crank angle sensor) / TPS (throttle body positioning sensor).

following that, suss out your auto fluid levels/condition (if its any color but cherry red - your autos probably toast) and if needbe be prepared consult a pro.
