I have a VS 95 sedan, this has 19" sv6 wheels on it... I am looking at replacing the front struts as the have no resistance in them... So I just went to pull the front wheel off and noticed that the guy that put the wheels on had cut half of the strut seat away where the spring sits to get the wheel on... there is a matter of a couple of milimeters between the wheel and the strut which concerns me...
Oviously these wheels rub up against the struts and I do not want to give way to the wheels... they tyres are 245/40 R19..
Any advice what I can do?? if I get new struts i'm gonna have the same issue...
Hey Mate.
I Believe the Struts From VR-VY are all the same & I have 245/35/19s & They fit both the VY & VX cars. Its only about 5mm clearance but its fine. Not Sure whats happened with yours. New Struts should still work, I Fitted 245/40/18s to the old VR and they fitted, was about 5mm to the strut also. Can you check the tyres on another VS?
mate I do not know why?? or why this goose has cut them...
if your tire used to hit, and thats the reason for them being cut, perhaps check the offset of the rim, and make sure its the right tire on the rim. i used to have 19x8.5 tires on my vr and were fine, but had to put a spacer on when i gave it more camber coz it tilted the top of the tire in toward the spring seat and hit. so make sure its the right rim 1st, and then go n check your alignments also to make sure theyre correct.
how would io know the offset? is it safe to put 5mm wheel spcers on the front?? rears seem to be perfectly fine..
thanks
Daz
on the back of rim itself, there will be a number, something like 40 or 45 etc probably have a line through it.
^^ what he said. it should say something like ET48 or 48P if its more than 48 your in trouble. higher number means the center line of the tread is closer to the strut than its supposed to be.
usually stamped on the inside of one of the spokes or just some where on the back of the rim. mine are all stamped in the spokes. steel rims are stamped on the outer rim near the valve. might give you an example of what to look for on your spare.
hey guys, thanks for your responses.... jacked her up and looked at the back of the rims, they are 19x80 48P... tried to pull the rim off but S**T its wedged on and will not budge... tried the front and its the same... Also is it normal when jacking the rear up from the body that the tops of the springs come out of their seat?? I had to jack it up a fair way just to get the clearance... I managed to get some pics if this will help.... the fronts have got me concerned with the cutting of the strut seat and worse its been hacked with a grinder...
sounds like you need short stroke rear shocks to keep the springs trapped.
Whoever did the suspension on that car is a butcher. Go get some shorter shock absorbers for the rear they are cheap as chips, you really should get shorter front shocks too however it depends on the length of your springs
If you can fit your springs in and they fit tightly when when the strut assembly is fully extended (No weight on it) then you should be fine with standard front shocks, however it's not technically perfect, thats how my Dunnydoor is setup with super lows.
Oh and given that everything else in the suspension seems to have been done by a blindfolded monkey you may want to consider checking that your springs didn't get chopped and that the idiot at least replaced some of the rubbers.
guys, a butcher? a blindfolded monkey?? this does not even start to express what he is... bloody yobbo!!! my son got the car coz this guy told him it was the "Fastest" V6 on the roads and he could not explain how bu it is!!! LOL.... what a wank!!!! I took it for a drive and it almost breaks your back, no suspension at all, this is what prompted me to look at it... Yes by the looks of it he had an orgasim with the grinder, looks as though the springs are chopped.... the rears sit almost to the rim line so the majority of the tyre is up in the guard... Wat a tosser!!!
Sorry didn't mean to offend, I was only commenting on the a-hole who had the car before you guys.
Looks like you are up for a bit of cash then, if your replacing all of the shocks and springs at least you can choose whether to have it lowered or stock and put together a system which with parts that compliment each other well.
nah mate ur not offending at all.... the guy nust have had a few bolots loose upstairs... yeah look like a few bucks to spend![]()
