I've just had the need to pull down a freshly built motor for my Commodore rally car.
The timing chain was totally dry and of course I need to find out why. I've prefiously removed the balance shaft and blocked the oil feed to the balance shaft front bearing, but I wouldn't think this would be the culprit. Where does the timing chain get it's oil from?
the 3800 don't have a oil feed for the balance shaft.
timing chain is oiled by splash lubrication. have you blocked any oil return holes anywhere?

Sorry my mixup. The front balance shaft bearing is a ball bearing race splash fed and the rear is a pressure fed white metal bearing. So removing the shaft and front bearing should have only let more oil get to the chain. There is only around 1500km on that chain and it's stuffed. Splash fed from where? Cos it looks pretty hard to get splash to it.
