Switching manual ecu to auto?

Talking to one of my mates dads tonite who use to build motors himself, crew for V8 supercars and has mates that use to race in V6 speedway series, he was saying a mate of his swapped his manual ecu for an auto one and the car ran alot better and seemed to performed alot better with it reving out more freely than it did previously with the manual ecu. This was in a commo V6, think it was a VN.

Just wondering if anybody has heard of doing this or thoughts?

which mate? vn & vs both manuals and auto's use the same pcm. Perhaps your mate's mate got a tune with it.
