    Default Boot rust!!

    Hey guys
I unfortunately have the brown bug in my boot. The largest oval is actually a hole about 4cm across and has infected where the boot rubber actually sits. the rest appears to be just surface rust. I was wondering how much it would cost to get it cut and replaced/get the other small area's tend to before they get worse. I don't want to fiberglass over it because if left unattended, it could spell death for my vs.

FYI, this isn't a pic of my car as i don't have it for the moment. The Oval's indicate where the rust is!

Clean up & or remove the rust & glue a new piece of metal in leaving a good overlap of metal - use sticaflex to glue it in - same stuff as they use for windscreens - they use that to glue in windscreens & firewalls into commodores & others & they are supposed to be an integral part of the strength of the car - so if it can hold those sorts of things - then this wont be a problem - then you dont have to worry about metal distorting with welding etc. Use a good rust convertor & sand it a bit & hit it with some rust paint - use the rust converter that your manufacturer recomends so its compatible with the paint. Rust paints are designed to be used without a rust convertor or primer as the paint has an acid in it - if you use something different like a rust convertor then there can be problems.

Yup basically what bpefi said. i personally would get the rust converter onto it then buff it up with sand paper, bog up any pitting, blend it out and paint.

An actual photo would be better, but going from your description it appears the rust has happened where there are 2 skins...moisture gets between the 2 and is trapped and starts the rust. If you are going to keep the car for many years then it should be cut out....but that will probably cost more than you would expect as the rust you see is not the true picture...it will extend much further. To do this at a panelbeater would not see you leaving about $400 lighter and I would doubt they can guarantee it will not come back....and remember that if you have this amount of rust in the boot there will be plenty elsewhere.
So, what I'd do to the serious rust you mention (not the surface rust) is similar to what the previous posts outlined....dig all the loose rust and scale out - use a flat blade screwdriver to scrape and dig it all away as much as you can. Then blow/clean all the dust etc away and then apply a rust stop/neutraliser to the rust, wait till it cures (read directions), then get some bog and fill the hole in, sand then brush paint with any white gloss oil based paint (I presume your car is white?)
I wouldn't use Sikaflex as you cannot sand it and it is not designed for filling. Just go to SuperCheap (or competitor) and ask for a rust neutraliser and a small tin of bog....should cost no more than $20.

Thanks for the input guys. This sort of thing is a real bit^h. @Hako you're right, that's is exactly where it happened. It Hasn't got on to the boot skin at all, luckily. Its sort of peeled back a bit, away from it. I'll get you guys a pick as soon as I can. I want the strongest possible solution, as i will be doing quiet a serious stereo install. I don't wont it to ruin the bog. Money isn't too much of a worry, anything up to $800 wouldn't kill me. Anyways. Thanks guys.
