    Default steering wheel/ neon lights

    g'day everyone,
just wondering if i can put an aftermarket steering wheel into my vs??
or is it illegal because of the airbag and thus wouldnt pass roadworthy ever again?

also how would i attach a neon light for the boot?? is it just a matter of taking the
stock light out and using those wires for a neon?? aswell as my roof light into blue
LED lights, oh and another i just remembered putting neon lights around the stereo??

oh and whilst im annoying everyone with the questions may aswell ask how to do a
dash light conversion into blue lights?

not 100% on putting ALL these in because i already have the floor neon lights so i think it would be way to many blue lights from the interior but just curious as to which are easier/ look better

    thanks

It's illegal to change the steering wheel with airbag....dunno about the rest.

    thanks heaps hako,
been wondering for awhil, seen quite a few
vr-vs with aftermarket steering wheels and
was very curious, although would it just not
pass roadworthy sort of illegal or if you get
    pulled over, receiving a canary?
also, what about if the aftermarket has a spot
for an airbag? my dad had a momo in his old xr8
and it had a spot for the airbag to go in, is that
    legal?

Apart from being illegal, I consider it foolish to remove a saftey device.

I fail to see how an explosion in your face can be safe, I've had an airbag deploy on me in my mates car. That ###ing hurt.

Please tell me you're not being serious?

Apparently you know something more that every safety engineer at every car manufacturer.

It's not supposed to be a pillow that's soft and comfortable. It's supposed to prevent you from ending up dead or with serious brain injury in a serious head on collision.

Though the later may not be so apparent after the act in some peoples case.

    To the OP,

Removing an airbag is illegal. Your vehicle will not pass a roadworthiness check unless you somehow manage to get it engineered, which is highly unlikely. IF you get pulled over, you will receive a major defect notice (canary) and they may not let you drive the car away.

If you put an aftermarket wheel on with an airbag, you will still probably need to get it engineered and have the engineer plates and certificate in your car so when you get pulled over you can show it to the lads in blue.

The boot neon SHOULD be able to run off the cabling that is already in there for the regular light.

Roof light change to blue is simply a globe replacement. You can get LED replacements in any colour of the rainbow.

The dash conversion to blue is tricker I think. As the globes themselves are just regular light globes and there is a green filter on the backing to the dash guages, etc. Though I think you can get replacement backing panels with this removed and then you just need blue globes.

    1. It's illegal to remove an airbag from a car that came factory with one
    2. Why would you want to make your car less safe? Unless it's going on the track, then I can understand....but seriously, taking out the airbag for a bit of wank factor....it's a bit like having sex with a prostitute (who isn't on any other contraception) without a condom....you will eventually get her pregnant.

    thanks heaps jester for that

Also, i didnt want to have no airbag at all, how foolish do you think us 17 yr olds are (dont answer that)
i was more thinking about one with the airbag area, and seen quite a few on the forum without the
stock steering wheel, so it just a bit of knowledge for myself more then anything.

Not all Vs commys had the airbag, I know mine doesn't. That's probably the main reason though I'm sure some people have just removed them.

better it goes off in your face than your face meets the windscreen............if the bag hurt? the windscreen would of cracked you skull...better you have the airbag deploy than you skull cracks as it meets the windscreen..............

Why not put on a leather steering wheel off a VT/X (they seem a bit smaller then VR/S's) or put on a VY/Z steering wheel, and yes its possible and with little fuss.
My inlaw's have a AU tickford enhanced fairmont ghia, and the have a once nice looking MoMo steering wheel, complete with airbag. Im sure the wheel was after market since its red and black leather on a blue car,the rest of the inside is either black leather, grey cloth, woodgrain or chrome.

oh for god sake, yes its illegal but to everyone saying your stupid for taking out a safety device... you can get cars WITHOUT an air bag, and i have an airbag in my steering wheel if it wasnt illegal id have it out tomorrow, but it is so oh well

and i guess i wont be having any passengers in the car seeing as i only have 1 airbag and it would be stupid to not have one infront of you

if u want a sports steering wheel do it who gives a toss if its legal or not!!!!! as for boot neons i simply took the globe cover off and cut the wires and stuck three neons of the wires neons take bugger all power and look sweet, as for ones around ur deck i just plugged the neons into my cigarette lighter and tucked the cables behind the fascia easy done and last the dash think theres a write up on here but basically there is 2 screws above ur tacho unscrew them and gentle lift away from dash they have plastic clips goin into the dash there abit of a pain getn out once u got them out u have to unplug the connectors for the air-con hazard demister and light switch and dont worry where they go on re-install they only fit 1 place once thats done there i 2 more screws that hold the dash cluster in then u simply wiggle left to right abit and it will come out might take a bit of force then turn it around and with ur t10 blue neons turn the bigger of the holders out simply but turning anti clockwise and take out then put in leds and remember leds only work one way so test all globes are working before reinstalling everything. hope that hepls

thanks everyone, forgot all about this thread haha
turns out i dont have an airbag bit devo about that
but on the plus side i can now get a better wheel
also jestah, you seem to know about neons so any
reason my footrest ones would stop working??? they
are on a switch and wont turn on anymore, could i
have blown them? how could i test this?? and as for
the boot, so i just cut the existing lights wires and use
    those to put one in???

    cheers

Dont snip off the wires and join it up.

Splice into the wires, for some reason the light socket needs to be connected for an earth.

Don't cut them, pull back the insulation and insert wire in the middle.
