    Default VS Commodore running rich!!!

    Hi all,

VS commodore running rich. Serviced 2000kms ago. Plugs changed. Went to repco and asked for MAF sensor and was sold MAP sensor. It's my understanding that VS don't have MAP sensor. MAF sensor is located near air filter. Metal/plastic part. Am aware of this. Was I sold the wrong part? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Part I was sold - Fuel Miser, CMS 206 MAP Sensor

    Thanks

    Any error codes?

    What about your O2 sensors?

I'm only getting 300 - 350k's per tank. I plan on cleaning my MAF with MAF cleaner, cleaning the throttle body and replacing the O2 sensors.

If you are 100% sure your car is running rich, the first thing would change is the coolant temp sensor - the one with 2 wires to it. This sensor tells the ECU when the engine has warmed up and then leans the mixture. This is a lot cheaper than replacing O2 sensors etc. Also do a fault code check:Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
Take the MAP sensor back as the VS uses MAF as you say....don't buy a new MAF as they rarely fail as far as [I] know.
    Good Luck.

Take it back and get your money back? If you ask for a Mass Air Flow Meter they shouldnt stuff it up. I think theyre quite expensive, maybe in the region of 400ish from memory. Id be going for a second hand one personally. How did you know the old one was stuffed?

I bought what I thought was a new MAF as I was advised this may be the problem. Car is running rich as I'm not getting as much out of the tank and it is really fumey. 400 for a new part is really extreme. I will investigate how to check the error codes as I have never done this. Thanks so much and I will post my progress.

Mine started running rich, I did an error check and got

    Code 44 - Oxygen Sensor Lean (O2)
    Code 45 - Oxygen Sensor Rich (O2)

I don't look forward to replacing them, but I used half a tank in under a week with just very local driving which normally used quarter.

Guys, is it common to have buggered O2 sensors or have either sensor on its way out without bringing up a code?

Yeah, I have seen it plenty of times, its not bad enough for the ECU to pick it up but still makes a difference to your economy

In that case I would attempt to clean yours before replacing them as they might not be that bad that you have to rush out and replace them, sometimes cleaning them might get you a little more life from them.

Yes, the sensor part is inside the housing. You can try cleaning them as shown in the above link.

Another common problem with VS O2 sensors is the heater circuit. For some reason, some VS's had voltage leak from the heater circuit back through the sensor and it upset the sensors signals back to the PCM. Holdens fix was the cut the pink heater wire and tape it up on the RH sensor, but some people have had success with wiring the earth from the sensor directly back to the PCM.

The O2 sensors are picking up a fault - reset the codes and see what comes up ... it could mean anything from a bad fuel pressure regulator to bad injectors etc. The sensors are not faulty!
