Hi everyone, the auto transmission is playing up.It is clunking into reverse gear and also into drive. So can anyone tell me the obvious cause and also the worst case scenario thanks in advance?

Could be a lot of things, however it pays to check simple things like the fluid level - do this with the engine warm and running and in neutral - as well as being full and not under or overfull, the colour should be pinkish...if brown and smelling burnt then you need a trans oil and filter change. It can also clunk if one of the engine mounts is stuffed, or the idle is too high, or the TPS (throttle position sensor) is sending false info to the ECU.

Thanx for your response hako, the trans was serviced about a month ago, engine mounts are ok,I can feel the clunking noise in the transmission as I change from park to reverse and then into drive its definately coming from inside the trans.Im not sure if this problem is due to the car having a new thermostat fitted, coolant flush a few days ago?
Shouldn't be related, however maybe they knocked a vacuum line off the throttle body or something...might pay to remove the engine cover and have a good look for anything that looks different. There is a test for the TPS in Gregorys. Is the idle speed different?
