Hi guys, Im just helping a mate put his engine back in (304) and we're wondering if its easier
to re-install the engine with the extractors on already or should we take them off, drop
the engine in then bolt them up after? He said he had issues with the flange getting in
the way when pulling the engine out so im assuming its going to be a pain to get it back in with the extractors attatched?
I think it is easier to put the engine in with the extractors attached. Unless the rack is out, if the rack is out then it is just as easy it to do it either way.
Or, you could put the extractors in position in the bay first, then lower the engine in and bolt them up.
ok so we battled for an hour trying to get the engine in with the extractors on but it kept getting cought on the rack, so we unbolted the extractor and now its sitting on the mounts without any bolts in as it was getting dark. We will finish it off tomorrow.
I have never fitted extractors as I have always had them installed when I upgrade the exhaust or they come already fitted, so my next question is, do I lift one side of the engine to fit them up or drop the rack?
If they are sitting in the engine bay already, just lower the engine down onto the mounts then bolt the extractors up to the heads. What car are they going in?
When I replaced mine I lowered the extractors down with the motor, not bolted up because i couldn't Get the motor in with them bolted on and I couldn't get them on after the motor was in.... So just go slow and get a mate to lower the motor as you slide the extractors down with it.
"I realize you were young and inexperienced at the time, but in hindsight you should have chosen your parents more wisely."
Its in a VR Sedan, The extractor is in the garage now..lol. So looks like im going to have to pull the engine back out to slip the extractor into place... DOH!
The RH one won't go in if the engine is in without undoing the and moving the rack over. You should be able to lift the engine a bit and slide the extractor into place.
So move the rack and lift the engine or just one or the other?
you can jsut drop the rack ie remove 2 bolts from k frame and undo steering knuckle. but if the engines not bolted in i lift up slide the extractor in drop the engine back down then bolt it up can be a pain sometimes getting the knuckle back on the rack

All sorted boys.. Thanks for the advice, I lifted the engine slightly and she slid straight in....
