Default Removing steering wheel for replacement.

    Hey guys,
as you can see from the title I am looking at replacing my Steering wheel with a sports one. just a few questions; ( i did forum search and as such already know how to remove the wheel etc)

I was wondering as i will be replacing it with a non airbag wheel how can i bypass the airbag light (the simplest way other then black tape)
    -and-
Will i need a boss kit or are some wheels straight fit and if so which ones do you recommend.

    Thanks heaps

p.s sorry if i broke any rules etc i am new to Just commodores.

Welcome to the forum - unfortunately you cannot remove the airbag legally. If you do and you are pulled up by the law they will issue a ticket and a fine. Also you will not be able to obtain a RWC when you want to sell the car. If you have a prang you will compromise your insurance.
So, unfortunately you are stuck with the wheel you have.

Are you sure because i was informed that the airbag on a series 1 vs was optional and not standard so removing it would be fine. I could always put the wheel back on if it was required.

It was optional, but I don't know if that makes it ok.

It was optional, but your car has one, so that makes it illegal to remove.

What about buying a steering wheel designed for an airbag and swapping the air bag over?

Seeing as they sell replacement steering wheels that accept the airbag would probably make that legal. I could find none for the VR/VS but some for VT onwards: Holden VT-VZ Commodore Replacement Leather Airbag Steering Wheel - Dark Metalic Grey Trim - Compare prices & stores

Just recently heard of someone who had removed their airbag steering wheel in their VS commodore, fitted a normal sports type steering wheel, he ran into a new car worth $80,000 or so ,it was written off,and because the steering wheel in his car was not fitted with an airbag when the car was optioned with one, they knocked him back on his insurance and apparently now hes gotta pay for the other car as well as his own out of his own pocket.Bugger removing the airbag type steering wheel if thats what the insurance companies do to you if you cause a crash. Ive never had much to do with them,Ive never made a claim but they must definitely look for any little excuse not to pay up..

Leave the steering wheel alone, the airbag is there to break your nose in the event of a crash so that your brain doesn't get smashed out of your skull.

Take the money for the steering wheel and buy something usefull like new pads and rotors.

Welcome to the forums i'm fairly new too :P I know you didn't ask for my opinion but 100% against removing any safety device from any vehicle.

Yeah i understand that which is why i am organizing insurance in a branch so that i can actually talk to someone about it. Even when i insured it online you can insure it has not having an airbag its an extra. maybe that guy who couldnt get his pay out was still insured as having an airbag? I'm rather careful with my wheelings and dealings haha.

Apart from the roadworthy/insurance side of things, you are going to remove one of the best saftey devices fitted to a car?

    Don't you think that's a little stupid?

The money you save on some cheap and nasty steering wheel, you could use on another mod. Something that won't leave you with a brain injury.

Before going to an insurance broker, why not ring Queensland Transport and ask them if it is legal to remove the airbag. No broker will allow to insure a vehicle that has modifications that are not legal.
A quick look at the Q.T. site revealed:

Vehicles that are required to comply with ADR 69/.. or
ADR 73/.. or where originally fitted with a driver airbag
must not be fitted with a replacement steering wheel
without an airbag, unless it is supplied by the vehicle
manufacturer as an option for that model.
The diameter of any replacement wheel may be up to
25mm smaller than the original wheel but must not
    be less than 350mm.

    I have a question aswell.
If my VR didn't come standard with an airbag, can i just buy a wheel with an airbag and assume that the car already has pre existing wires and sensors?

    No.

You need the ABS module and associated wiring.
