vr commodore auto vacum hose

hello can someone tell me what the rubber hose is for and what it does on a vr commodore auto

Top of the transmission? is the breather hose..

is it important as we broke the metal bit off where the rubber hose goes on

As long as the breather hole doesnt get blocked off it should be ok.

Id still try to fix the breather pipe so it doesnt get dust and dirt in through the breather,maybe try some strong glue like araldite to fix the broken metal part as its only a breather pipe so its not under great deal of stress.
