Im not having much luck with my ute this weekend. I noticed the oil light was on
yesterday so I topped it up and the light went out, its reading on the dipstick well
above full now but after replacing a rocker cover gasket due to a leak, I turned the
car on only to see the oil light was back on.
So I thought maybe it was the angle I had the car on so I drove it out onto the street where its fairly flat and turned the
car off for a few minutes and then started it up again to see if the issue had
resulved itself, but the Oil light is still on?
Could I have a faulty oil pressure switch?
Could it be the oil pump?
I hear they can be a bit tempromental and just shit the tin
randomly? I do have a spare oil pump but have no idea whats involved in replacing
one? Are they simple to do?
I did degrease and high pressure wash the engine bay so perhaps that could be an clue?
[EDIT] I found this link in these forums.. Pretty sure I know what the issue is now VR Oil Pressure Light

2 options most likely here mate, 1) oil pickup is blocked only . 2) pickup is blocked and oil pump shit itself or sheered off the teeth/snapped. If its just the oil pick up pice of cake mate, drain the sump lower crossy undo sump remove pickup/replace and bolt everything back up..if its the pump theres a bit more involved ...eg, timing cover / chain / etc etc...not a fun job but still can knock it over in a day...
if the oil pump driveshaft (from cam to oil pump) is ok and its just a worn out pump its easy to replace. just undo bolts and it falls off. if it was a fully blocked pickup or snapped oilpump drive u would know about it cos it would tick big time! (no oil pressure to the hydraulic lifters)
the pressure relief valve has been known to stick open on them causing low oil pressure too, its in the round bit cast onto the pump housing with a big bolt head on the end
mate i reckon you have got water ingested into the oil pressure switch
happened to me on my v6
if you have a spare one swap em over
didnt see that you had edited the post
Never, never, wash an engine with a high pressure unit. If the oil light started coming on after you washed the engine, sounds like you might have water in the oil pressure sensor. Unplug the sensor from the oil pump and dry it out.
some are a lot more waterproof than others, yeah washing an RB30 with a gurney is asking for a dizzy full of water at least but i used to be a detailer a fair while ago, we did the cars for the local holden dealership. i lost count of the number of V6's and 5L's we did full details on for them, always gave the motor/engine bays a good hit and i cant remember having any water related dramas with them
Ok, so all is fixed.. I unscrewed the oil sensor and gave it a degrease then hit it with some WD40 and then a quick blast with the compressor to dry it out... Its a big releif to saythe least to have it fixed..
Even though these wasnt any abnormal engine noise it still has you on edge when your looking at the oil light, or as I call it the "too late light".
Thanks for your help fellas!
