    Default vr manual conversion speedo

    hey,
i have finished my manual conversion on my vr v6, it runs really good everrything i fine except for one thing. i cant for the life of me get the speedo working.
i have read all the posts about doing the wiring and i have searched like 1000 times to get as much info as possible but it is still dead.

i have a 12+ and a ground going to the sensor, my signal wire is going from the sensor to the speedo side of the ecu.
the only thing i can think of is to disconnect the signal wire from the ecu so its going straight to the speedo?
but i have heard that this is what causes the stalling problem?

    any help is much appreciated
    thanks heaps guys

If you are retaining the auto ECU then you need to bypass the ECU in regards to the speedo.

E.G The signal wire running up to the ECU, cut it, then the output wire (Purple with a white stripe I THINK!, not sure) attach the two and bobs someones uncle.

You should check out the HowTo section, there is a very good write up with pics.

ok i did have the signal wire going from the speed sensor into the ecu (just spliced it into the purple white wire) and the speedo didn't work, so i removed the pin from the ecu plug so the signal wire was going straight to the gauge but still nothing. my ground and 12v are still good.
    any1 have any ideas

Have you checked the speed sensor is still all good?

I know when I converted my VR to manual, as we were bolting the lot back together in a hurry we managed to break the purple signal wire going into the sensor. Except then it touched the body and got very crazy jumpy speedo sensors

It sounds like you bypassed the ECU correctly with the wiring up there from what I remember

If it works than you have wired it wrong or the speedometer output shaft is not turning to create a signal.

something is obviously wrong, no point asking what it could be unless you can test it....

ok i just tested the speed sensor and it works, the wiring is exactly how ive been told to do it, the fuses are all good.
i am completely mind ####ed on this, it seems like i have tried everything.
i will pull the cluster out and check the cog and see if its still good, but it was working when it was auto
anything else i shold look for on the cluster? all i can think of is the cog and maybe re-sit the needle?

thanks guys hopefully i can get this sorted

were you able to test for pulse whilst the car is in motion? maybe get a helper, if all checks out then got to be wiring, maybe post a pic how you have done it..

I just had the multimeter hooked up, turned the car on, let the clutch out and it worked on the multi meter. So somehow its just not getting to the gauge.

you are connected to the purple wire on the dash side of the plug not the ecu side of the plug

no it is correct, you must bypass the ECU and go straight to the dash, but as you said, you have done this. does your VR have the speed alert thingo, if you hold down the up and down buttons while you turn the car on it should become a digital speedo.

If that works then you know to look at the cluster, if it doesn't work then recheck all the wiring and quadripple check the wiring again.

Oh and get a test light and make sure that you are getting power when you are meant to be getting it. I did one of these for my mate once because he had rushed his install and wired it up so the speed sender only had power in reverse, I don't know wtf he did, only took me five minutes to fix though.

Just humour me and try pinching it from your cigar lighter instead, Confirm that the cigar lighter works though and use the main wire, not the backlight wiring, ensure you have a good earth too.

The best setup would be to go to the fuse panel, notice how you have several spare spots with power to them, put a fitting in and a 15 amp fuse, run the wire down and use that but its up to at the end if the day.

i think i'll pick up some more wire from supercheap 2morro and re-wire the whole thing. if it still doesn't work i'll have a look at getting an auto electrician out to my place to have a peek.

Make sure you wire it to C12 at the PCM http://www.oldholdens.com/temp/carst...0V6%20Auto.jpg
