    Default testing coil packs

    hi guys,

did a search on here but could find no exact explaination on how to do it. how do u test the coil packs on a vs engine to see if they r not work correctly? how do u do it with a multimeter and without one?

    cheers

To test these coils with a multimeter, you just measure the resistance of the primary and secondary coil windings.
The primary resistance should be between 0.3 -1.5 ohms. The secondary resistance should be between 5 -7 kohms.
The primary resistance is measured from the two contacts where the coil contacts the DFI module.
The secondary resistance is measured from the two spark plug lead connectors on the coil...
Ive seen these coils show up to be ok when tested on a multimeter, but it was still causing a misfire,so you cant fully rely on the multimeter readings.I keep a new coil that I use for testing,I just swap it with each of the 3 coils and drive it each time to see how it runs,If one of the coils is not 100%,then you will notice it as soon as its replaced with a new one.Ive found its always best to replace all 3 coils at once and to only use genuine holden coils,or good aftermarket brands like MSD

An ohm meter works fine for testing cct resistance, but it will never test the insulation resitance properly @ 3V or whatever ur ohm meter might be. An insulation resistance tester(megger) is the only way to check them properly, even then it will not fully test the secondary fully unless you happen to have a 10kV+ megger.
