Remove the trim around the handbrake and check to see exactly what is happening....probably bent the rod that disengages the ratchet pawl. Replacement may be the option if it's badly bent - from memory the handbrake is held on by large pop rivets.

Can you push the button and watch the rod move the pawl that works the ratchet? - the problem would have to be there. I'm only guessing but maybe when the button was pressed too hard, the pawl went past it's normal position, and needs to be pulled back to it's normal position. Use a torch and a mirror to inspect if necessary. To remove the handle you would need to disconnect the cable underneath the car and then the handbrake lever retaining bolts (no pop rivets - confused with T bar).

This happens to mine all the time.. The grip moves up a tad and when the button gets pushed in it catches and stays released.. I just give it a solid hit with my palm and shes apples... I'll spray some wd-40 in there soon...
