Question VS IRS ABS // Diff Whine / Diff Service / Replacement

    Hey all,

I have an incredibly loud diff whine,
I was wondering would a service fix this?
An throw in some 80-140 oil ? How much is needed?

If not, off the top of anyones head, Do you remember the tools needed to remove the diff, As I may need to replace it and/or pick one up from the wreckers.

    All help greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

A service made my vs diff quieter, still whinned a bit though. It's really easy to change. From memory I bought a 1.5l bottle and had some left over

i just did a diff swap in my vs ss, used the best part of 2L to fill the new one. tools needed are just a basic spanner/socket set, and some hex head sockets for the axle bolts (but allen keys would work if u had a breaker bar/hollow pipe to swing off them) the breaker bar could come in handy for the diff mount bolts too

Is it a constant whine, or is it louder when the diff is under load or when you are losing speed ??? Does the sound change if you put your trans (manual or auto) into neutral ??? Have you checked underneath to see how much play there is in your propeller shaft near the diff end ??

It's definately diff whine, Louder as the diff is under load, deeper noise under loud, higher pitched noise off load.

Barely any play in the prop shaft, Which makes me thing the bearings are gone.

I might pick up some 80-140 diff oil an throw that in tomorrow to see how it goes, its cheap anyway.

Depends entirely on what is causing the whine. If it's the gears then there's not much you can do about it without new ones. Often it's the pinion bearing which will need a diff rebuild (may as well do the rest of the bearings at the same time). Any other whining sounds usually require a new girlfriend.

Lack of oil (or clean oil) may have been the cause but rarely fixes the problem.

Turns out my current diff is a LSD

So what fluid would people recommend for it?

Did the Berlina's come with the buyers choice of either IRS or a LSD? If u dont have IRS does that mean u have a LSD?
How often should diff oil be changed and is it hard to do yourself??
Sorry for hi-jacking ur thread Mat!

Thats ok mate, Change diff oil every 50-75,000 km from memory. SImple to do. It's 1.65litres in an IRS diff.
Berlinas had the choice of IRS & Live axle. Also options of LSD & Single spinner.

    Cheers

cool, might change it. ive done 110000km since i bought it and never changed it! just ticked over 230000. how do u tell what kind of diff u have? So could a berlina have just come with a live axle and single spinner?? someone told me once all the vs berlina's were either live axle with lsd or irs with non lsd... bulls**t??
