1. I tried to start the car up this morning and it wouldn't go, I moved the auto shifter a little in park and it started like normal, is there a way to fix this little problem?
2. If I'm going slow (such as reversing or parking) and turn into the park/driveway, the steering wheel shudders a little and sounds terrible.
3. While driving and the gears change, the car jumps a little? My mates and I changed the trans oil, filter and gasket about 2,000k's ago and they said it would stop the jumping of the gears but it hasn't. The oil we used was Burson's DX III with a cork gasket.
4. There's a little rust hole in the muffler and now the car sounds terrible, I'm not the richest guy in the World, so where would be the best place to find a replacement muffler.
If pictures/videos are needed I'll try and get them up if my explanations aren't clear enough.
upload a vid to youtube and link it to us if ya can.. Easiest way to diagnose the problem.
Which one would you like a video of 304runner?
1. I used to have a VR that did this So i just started it in Neutral. Didnt really bother me.
2. Sounds like its low on Power steering fluid
3. Hard to know without driving it.
4. A stock cat back exhaust will get you change from $300 installed. If you want a cheap option im sure you could find a second handy from someone who's upgraded to a sports exhaust. Keep an eye on ebay
monkeys347, I topped up the power steering fluid last week with THIS.
I'm willing to install an exhaust with my mates since as I said before, I'm not the richest person in the World![]()
Pricey, there is products you can use to fix holes in your exhaust if your not the 'richest'
Also check your power steering level again... You could have a leak..
1) That's your neutral safety switch. If you ask Hako -nicely- he might send you the wiring diagram for you to trace back (Not really worth it if you aren't going to take the time to fix it.. Just start it in neutral or continue pushing on your shifter)
2) Your power steering pump may be on the way out, but it's likely you are just low on fluid as previously stated.
4) Your local Auto shop will have some tape you can place over the exhaust like a bandaid if you really want a cheap and nasty fix.. Only other thing to do is to go to your wreckers and get a cheap replacement.
Ditto Bourbonated
1.....it can be adjusted by loosening/moving the inhibiter switch but simplest is to move the selector till you get sick of it.
2.....If it's not low on fluid, then I'd suggest you get some power steering "stop leak and shudder" - this will stop any leaks, make seals work better etc.
3.....the cheapest way is to get hold of some sheet aluminium..even split a few cans or flatten a sheet of corrugated iron or somehow get hold of something that's metal and bendable. Then you plug the hole with either steel wool (non-soap) or some muffler putty, then wrap the sheet of whatever you have around the hole in the muffler. If necessary wrap some fencing wire around this and twist up good. This method will not seal the hole, but it will cut the noise down, and that's what will attract the law.
Good Luck.

2.....In answer to this same problem I had last year, Hako put up the following, which sorted it out for me:
"I'd check where the steering column goes thru the bulkhead - there is a grommet there that dries out and makes a groaning/creaky noise when turning - spray with WD40 from under the car. This fault is very common so I'd try it first. Post back if you need more explanation."
My apologies for not putting the video up yet, I had a big night last night haha. I only have the camera on my phone so it may not be the best quality or sound, so I'll go make the video within the next hour of everything together instead of short clips.
Edit: I've taken short clips, I'll put them together with Windows Movie Maker tonight and upload it, if no sound comes up I'll try and record just the sound in the morning.
Also, when my assistant was helping me by turning the steering wheel, I saw the tension pulley jumping, that might be in the videos but if not I'll get a shot of it tomorrow as it is now pitch black outside.
One more thing about the rear muffler, my lovely family have given me a little loan to buy one and get it installed, it's gonna cost $165 for a VN Commodore rear muffler, sounds pretty good.

I apologize for the 1 and a bit month bump, I sold the VR and listed all the problems to the new owner, I gave up with making the video because Microsoft programs are frustrating
But now I have a '97 Commodore wagon, Series II, few problems here and there but nothing major![]()
