Transmission leaking

Hey Guys,

Ok here is the story, drove to my mums place from Newcastle to Black springs on Friday night, everything went the well. I kicked over my car today to take it for a drive and notice a small amount of transmission oil leaking from the bottom cooling line. I tighten the clamp back up and that stopped the leaking, I check the end of the hose, it wasn't split but was rather hard. So I will replace that when I get back home. I topped the transmission back up, everything was running fine, no more leaking from the cooling line, then all of a sudden I noticed some smoke coming from the passenger side of the motor, I look down and there has been a sh!t load of transmission oil dropped onto the ground, roughly 1.5 - 2 liters worth. The only place I can think is that the Torque converter has cracked/split and it is leaking from there? Any ideas?

clean everything, start the car and observe where the flow of fluid is comming from. Could it have been a buildup from the previous leak, by your description the previous leak was comming from where the cooling lines join the radiator?

The other thing on that side is the selector seal, but thats allot of fluid. oh and if it is comming from behind the inspection cover it is more then likely that the pump and or pump bush has failed, in which case you will need to drop the transmission out of the car to fix it.

BUT before you panick, buy four cans of degreaser and a liter of kero and a pack of three el cheapo paint brushes.

1. Jack car up and put on stands, handbrake on and back wheels chocked.

2. with everything stone cold spray two cans worth of degreaser over everything that looks remotly dirty, get your hose/pressure cleaner or whatever and hose it off after letting it soak for 15 minutes.

3. After it has dried a bit / drained off get your kerro and a brush (Pouring the kero into an old soup can is good) and go to town brushing it and scrubbing it all over all of the built up dirty parts, do as much of the engine and transmission as you can physically reach.

4. Hose it off again.

5. If things are still pretty bad go to step two and repeat.

6. Now start the car (You may prefer to lower the car back onto the ground for this step) and let it run for 10 minutes then shut it off.

7. give it an hour or so to cool down, climb under with a floodlight so powerfull it looks like god is comming back to the earth via underneath your car, inspect for leaks and report the exact location, too many places a 4l60e can leak from for anyone to start stabbing at it.

Just my 2c worth, and thats probably all its worth :P

Oh and where does the breather run to, if it has an extension on it that is.

Thanks man, will jump under tomorrow and have a better look at where it could possibly be. I'm preparing myself for the worse as I know it had a Code 68 before. Sort of need to get it fixed as I'm about 5 hours away from home and have work on Tuesday... FML!

All fixed, turned out to be the same hose that was leaking. Turns out my Harmonic Balancer is cracked so that is being replaced now.

Hey good to hear the transmission was an easy fix and at least the balancer is easy to replace if you have a tough puller and an afternoon to spare.
