Default I have fitted extractors but...

Hello guys, I needed to replace my cracked exhaust manifold and i found a set of advanced extractors for 100 bucks (came with a cat all ready welded on).

Anyways i fitted these and all is good i think, the only issue i have is that where it passes between the engine and steering rack on the drivers side, there is bugger all room. It is actually touch the engine to gearbox brace. I have read that replacing the engine mounts will help, but while i convince the wife to let me spent more money, will removing this brace cause any major problems? I am sure it is there for a reason but i am only talking for like 3 weeks at most.

    Cheers Andy

removing that brace sounds like a really bad idea... make sure you have the right type of extractors for your car - auto/manual there is a difference.

if it's touching then engine mounts need to be replaced (if the engine is sitting down).

you can tell easily but starting the car, getting a mate to put it in drive (hand brake on and foot on brake pedal) and give it a bit, rev it up to say 3k and open the bonnet, you'll see the engine get out of bed if the mounts are sagged .

Another way of telling is to look at the bottom of the engine mount and see if it has collapsed a lot of engine mounts in V6's won't break but just collapse over time.
And wasn't there a difference between standard extractors and up spec models (Calais, Statesman and Caprice) as well?

Thanks for the reply Nathan, I am not sure if the extractors were for a manual or auto i will see if i can find out. I will check the mounts soon. Do you know how much a new set of mounts would be?

yeah about $120 for a set. if you're doing the extractors you could easy do the mounts, just don't let the engine fall on your face!

not sure if extractors were difference for upper class models, never heard that before... maybe because they have abs? but i don't think thats anywhere near the exhaust.

if the extractors are touching the engine/gearbox, then engine mounts aren't going to do anything considering they are bolted to the engine.

and standard and up-spec model extractors are the same - in pacemaker at least.
