Sounds like a bearing .. I have a VR motor at home doing exact same .. At first thought was maybe timing chain .. But seams to sound like a bearing ( prob bottom end )
Sounds like a big end gone....if one has gone it will usually spread bits of bearing thru the oilways and next thing another goes unless the motor throws the rod before then. In the big smoke you should be able to get one from a wrecker or private for around $400 which is the cheapest option. Not the nicest of things to happen.

Does it get quieter once it warms up?
your engines f**** it happened to me on a vn v6, we just bought the car, (knowing it had the knock) drove it 1.5km up the road and it ceased. I'd prepare for the worst to be honest mate
Okay thanks for your replies everyone, i had a feeling the engine had stuffed up.... I am looking for another VS engine now, if anyone has a cheap working one for sale let me know, or even a VS that's been in an accident that has a perfect working engine. I am located in Melbourne. Cheers
yea mate i had the same thing happen to my vs wagon a couple years ago. had a knocking noise which at first i thought was the harmonic balancer because they do the same thing but i have since been told that if it is the balancer the knocking stops if you rev up the engine.
sounds like yours was like mine were the knocking gets faster and louder the higher the rpm went. in that case it is a bottom end bearing. it is much easier and cheaper just to get a new one and put it in yourself. not hard to do at all me and a mate done it on a weekend with no hassles and a couple of cartons of corona.
if it starts at 2000 rpm. its a big end, dont drive on it! my motors currently out for the same thing..hopefully yours isnt as bad as mine where i had to fork out for a new conrod and have my big end journal ground down because it spun during a skid at ~5000rpm!
Same thing with the stato I bought. Swapped engine over from Vs. No worries
