Default VR V6 Engine Hammer Noise & Feel.

Ok my sister's VR has developed a hammer like sound in the engine in the rear section it can also be felt in the auto trans shifter any idea's what it could be and if it would be easy to fix or should we just look at getting another engine.

    Thanks for any help.

From the description it sounds like a big end gone in the engine especially if the engine has high K's ....or possibly the flex plate cracked although that will sound a bit "tinny"....could also be the balance shaft. If it's in time with the engine and alters tone slightly as revs drop then big end very likely. You could also try shorting out 1 spark plug at a time and see if it alters the noise on one particular cylinder......but doesn't sound good.

After having a good listen to mine on the car ramps the sound is not coming from the rear end it is more at the top and at the back. I also find that when taking off you can hear it but when I get to about 50/60ks the noise is not heard and not felt it all seems to go away even on the highway doing 70/100ks.

The engine it self is still going strong no power loss no miss firing plenty of power.

Also when Cold I don't really hear the noise it seems to be louder when warm at least I think so.

    Is this more helpful ?

If it really is the big end stuffing up what are the cost's of an engine change over with a low K's engine from the wreckers it's not something I can do my self anymore.

Exact same symptoms as my old motor. No tapping when cold, can hear it more at slower speeds etc.

    I threw another motor in.
