    Unhappy heating up in traffic??

Ok have a little dilemma my vs ute is heating up at the lights the temperature guage goes more than half way this isnt just on hot days the coldest of nights aswell. Now when i take off after driving for 5 mins it goes back to normal. Ive checked the relays and fuses but couldnt find any blown. It hasnt got any coolant in it from what i can see. And i cant hear the thermo kicking in either So ive bought a new thermostat and new radiator coolant today and ill flush the radiator tomorrow but after that could it be the radiator or thermo or something else? Thanks for any help!

does the fan come on when it gets hot if so i wouldnt worry to much as long as it doesn't get right up in the red spot it might just want a good flash not just lettin the coolant out and toping up it could just be the thermostat or radiator cap update us after you have done this

Just give the cooling system a flush, replace the thermostat the one in it might not be opening up and then bleed it,check it the next day and add more coolant to it if needed. What condition is the radiator in? Most of them shit themselves after 2-3yrs,check that all the hoses are air tight and is the waterpump working properly check that as well and always use a coolant just using water=corrosion

I'd also renew the pressure cap while you're at it. I also found with my vr at one stage that the electrical connection for the thermo fans just to one side of the radiator was making good contact and stopping the fans from starting.

My temperature gauge goes up and my fans seem to kick in only when I am stopped at the lights, once I start driving again the gauge drops down and fans stop.

Fitting a new thermostat and fixing the overheating problem would be more important then worrying about how low the rear end sits.pfff.

Yeah,Id get it in there now,it only takes a few minutes to replace a thermostat. The same as it only takes a few minutes for a faulty thermostat to cause overheating and cook the engine.

Before you even think of modifying things with the Ford thermos (why?) it would be better to sort the thing out so you know where you are starting from.

GMH does some pretty comprehensive testing of vehicle cooling systems and it's unlikely that it will need to be modified, just repaired if it has a problem at all.

Yep, the gauges move quite a lot. On V6, from ~1/4 to 1/2 is only a temp. span of around 10C, with ~1/2 ~104C i.e. normally the highest temp.. The gauges do vary a bit between cars and I think that there was an update of sender or gauge at some point and that alters the gauge reading for a particular temp. in VS too.

If the car is new to you, maybe it's normal. It may be worth paying a workshop to perform a quick scan to check the temp. reading off the sensor for the PCM. That may be cheaper (if not as much fun) as replacing parts or performing work randomly.

If you don't want to do that, ~$15 for a digital multimeter (Ohmeter) and a web search for the specs. - temp. vs resistance - on the sensor will get you to the same place. The part number for the sensor is moulded into the base of the connector.

If the car is known to you and this is a new problem then, of course, you can start diagnosis with checking for coolant leaks, bleeding, thermostats etc. but I think that you may be trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

Temperature sender unit - The temperature sender unit used in VS V6's was carried over from VR's, but the location was changed to a hotter part of the engine. This may cause higher temperature readings on the gauge before the thermo fan cuts in. In mid 1997, the sender unit was revised to suit the new engine position and engine temperatures, which show a lower reading on the gauge before thermo fan activation.

As cheap6 said you won't need au thermo's, your standard fan is good enough on the v6's
