Default VS Acclaim with three thousand K

VS Acclaim with three hundred thousand K

I have just been offered a VS acclaim for $1200 o.n.o which the rego runs out on June 30th

So far I know it has oil leaks and power streering leaks and needs a new belt

Would it be worth it or the amount of K's be an issue?

I still have my VR which has less k's.

What would you think would be a fair price though? I have known this guy over ten years, so I could get it much cheaper....

I'm with Pete - spend your money on your VR....unless it stands a reasonable inspection and in NSW you need a RWC every 12 months. The belt bit may mean it broke and the car was driven with no water pump?...power steering and engine leaks can cost $$$$ to fix and are RWC favourites. The car is probably worth no more than $500....wreckers will offer $300 if you can drive it there....if they have to tow it then the price is nil. 300,000km and no rego .....not good. For a little bit more than $2000 you can get a VS with lots of reg and much lower K's so you should consider that....plenty on Ebay or Carsales. Don't let sentiments colour your judgement!

I bought my VS with 320,000 with a very poor service history

Still going strong to this day (infact just wen't blasting up through the hills enjoying the wet roads at 4-5000RPM :P)

That being said I brought mine home on the back of a truck as a near write off when I bought it so I knew it was going to need alot of work, luckily I haven't had to do much to the engine yet which has left me with spare money that I spent getting lots of MACE mods :P

The belt is still intact, but there is a noise... he was told it was the belt, but I feel it is a bearing on one of pulleys or even the water pump.

My VR is not without problems, which also has a power streering leak and a oil leak. the power steering is worse compared to the small oil leak which I was told could be the rear main.
Plus there is thump noise at times when you drive off at the lights which tells me the mounts need replacing or the bushes in the rear need to be changed
My plan for the VR was to replace the power steering pump and all hoses for it, plus check and replace engine and trans mounts or rear bushes if needed.

I am going to check out the VS next Sunday.... The main reason why I was after the VS is because you have a better options on the engine replacement since it is an ecotec.

But yes my main worry is the amount of K's and not knowing the service history of this VS...

if they have been taken care of and not constantly flogged, theres no reason they shouldnt go over 500 thousand. Get some pics up, power steering pumps arnt worth much these days and isn't very hard to change.

Personally I'd spend the money fixing your VR. It might seem like a good deal but do you really need another car? And it could really turn into a money pit when you find problem after problem. Just fix the VR so you don't have to worry IMO.

They say the average Km's of cars is 20,0000km per year......so the VS is 15 years old and....20,000km X 15 = 300,000km. So that is average KM's for that car.

I have just been told the oil light comes on at times then goes off... could this mean the engine is full of sludge or is going to need a compression test?

Could be a faulty oil pump/sensor

I had a bad sensor in my old audi, oil light came on when going round corners as the sensor got a false reading

I was also thinking it might be a dirty oil pick up?

Stick to your car. Least you know most of it's problems who knows how many hidden problems the other car has.

I have the car now lol the oil leak is driver’s side rocker cover gasket... Went well on the freeway. Got home no problem. But when I put in reverse it stalled and when I started it again the revs were a bit high then it settled down.. Would this be the TPS?

I have not paid for it yet .
