Hi Guys
Can anyone tell me the process to bypassing the heater core on a VS
Mine has a leak and is fogging up every window every time I drive the car and I simply don't have time to rip the dash out to fix it.
Can anyone give me some pics of which hoses I have to play with and what I need to do.
Thanks Guys
Hve you read the cheaters way to change the heater core in the how-to i think? Basically cut the 2 solid pipes under the drivers footwell, cut pipes on the new heater core the same and slide it in. Use rubber heater hose and clamps over the pipe joint. No dash out req'd. Looks pretty easyish. As for bypassing i dont know.
Should probably add I need something that should hold for a while (not corks as some recommend :P) as I am about to depart on a 5000km road trip.
Unfortunately I have spent most of my money saving for this road trip so can't afford a new heater core right now
On the drivers side under the alternator you need to locate your two heater pipes (both will have a black rubber hose attached that run along the chassis rail to the heater tap, then through the firewall. Basically, all you need to do is remove the hose on the top metal heater pipe (slighly thinner than the bottom one) and connect the other end of the bottom hose to the top pipe. Therfore the bottom pipe will just loop straight back to the top pipe and bypass the heater core as no coolant will be flowing to it. Doing this will not allow you to heat inside the car at all.
Hope that helps.
Cheers.

same as above or get a hose with a U bend and take the 2 hoses off and just put the U hose in there place..
You have 2 options:
1st is go to SuperCheap and buy 2 hose blanking plugs - then locate both heater hoses where they attach at the firewall and insert the plugs and use a worm drive clamps to hold them on.
2nd is cut or disconnect the hoses where they connect to the heater tap and insert a short length of copper tubing - don't use black plastic ag fittings as they soften with heat - clamp as above.
In both instances have the temperature dial set to cold.

Theres 2 heater hoses, ones got a fatter end,you just remove the other small ended hose from the engine, then join the opposite end of the fat ended hose back to the engine where the other hose was removed from, and then clamp it.Ive had to do this a couple of times when Ive had a broken heater tap. all you need is a screwdriver...

You can use old spark plugs as plugs.
Just a little note on bypassing the heaters.
The water going trough the heater core is slowed down due to the tubes...When you bypass the core with a pipe with out slowing or stopping the water flow, you have coolant that isnt going through the radiator..Over time on a long hot run things get hot..It happens up here a lot of times during summer...I see a lot of in cars where they are chasing a over heating problem only to find the heater hose is reconected to bypass the core...
All things being equal the rad should handle the extra heat..But we all know Murphy.
just a bit of grey matter info.
