My mate is wanting to put a Vp Engine into a Vr Calais. Could this be done?

    yep, same engine essentially.
do a search, its been covered in a fair bit of detail before.
there is some issue with mating the auto trans between the two types i think, -as vp has a kickdown able and vr(or vs?) is an electronically controlled auto trans but like i said, do a search

If your VR is a auto ( being a Calais I'd say it is) then you'll need to change the timing cover as the VR autos have cam angle sensors.

Is there a magnet on the cam sprocket on the Vp engine, if not how dose the sensor read the sprocket. Or do you need to change the cam sprocket from the Vr engine to the Vp engine?

The VP doesn't have the magnet but will have the hole in the cam gear, so you remove it from your current engine with some point nose pliers and sit it into your VP engine.
