hey guys i was wondering if anyone could tell me what are the signs of a shot wheel bearing in the front? when im driving 50+ km can def hear a grinding noise its more on the highway at 100km. when driving straight there is no grinding noise but if i slightly turn left in anyway BANG! grinding noise. but when i turn right nice and smooth. any help would be awsome
generally a shot wheel bearing ur'll hear a whooomp whooooomp type noise when turning the opposite way to the buggered bearing as this puts a little extra load on it.
a grinding noise could be brake dust cover rubbing... maybe
oh ok so if i was to turn right it should make that noise due to the extra load.... might have another look around the brake area maybe i checked both sides the other day and the right side brake pads where hard to get out due to siting to far in to the rotors maybe that could be it???
another way to check a shot bearing is jack the car up, and grab the wheel top and bottom (12oclock and 6oclock) and pull and push the wheel back and forth, it will move a little. compare both sides if one side moves more than the other its most likely that side thats stuffed, and turning the other way whilst in motion should confirm that side also.
remove each wheel and just check nothing is rubbing and pads are fine whilst your there too.
just ducking out, will check back after. post up ur results
Generally the wheel bearing will make a rumbling whirring type of noise, most of the time the noise is cyclic, ie rumble...pause...rumble...pause...rumble. Sometimes they do make a constant noise that gets louder as you go faster. Turning the wheel one way is usually a dead give away that the bearing is shot when the noise gets louder.
Noise turning right = LH bearing and vise versa.
yeah mine is a constint grinding noise when turning left or even slightly.. unless im going straight or turning right there is no grinding.. its only when turning and def gets louder when going faster.. so im prob looking at a new bearings on the drivers side .. hard to do???
na mate not to hard from memory the hardest part was getting the rotor off my ute i changed mine about 5 years ago so cant remember exactly how to do it but do remember it wasnt that hard and took me about an hour or so
thanks mate hope so lol but i dont mind if its abit hard best way to learn
just had a look jacked it up no play when i try to move it side to side and up and down. did to both sides and there was no play.. so im assuming it couldnt be there bearing.. also i checked the brakes and rotors and there both good.
would not hurt to get some synthetic brake grease and relube the caliper pins as I had similar noises when one of the calipers were not releasing properly
yeah when i was spinning the right wheel the brakes seemed as if it were slightly gripping.. but as i was spinning it while it was dead straight i didnt think it would have been the problem..other side was normal
