    Lightbulb VS brake light issues!!!

Hey guys, annoying issues with my brake lights!

It's intermittent and seems to change up a lot but I've pinpointed that it's the left hand sight brake light and it must be something to do with the wiring because I just put new globes in.

at the moment when parkers are on, and you depress the brake pedal everything appears to work fine (except the RHS one looks like it's already on - eg brighter, than the LHS one), when the parkers are off and you depress the brake pedal the light comes on on the dash and the LHS light fails to fire.

Should I just replace the looms? what's the common things to go wrong with VS brake lights?

    any help much appreciated.

    cheers

If it has or had a towbar, start there with wiring issues I'd think.

Which light on the dash is coming on at times?

I have had to replace the brake light switch on the brake pedal because it was worn out and only worked every now and then, but your issue is different.

Single filament globe fitted to park/brake socket?
    Bad earth for brake/park socket?
    Brake/park globe fitted backwards?

+1 for checking the Trailer Harness if it had one! Mine just failed not long ago, took me ages to find the issue.. But, the Trailer loom had exposed wires

Defiantly you're problem sounds like its a wire shorting out, Check the connections from the tail light to the plug itself, do they all look ok? if Yes, then run back and check the wires directly running to the bulb.

I've heard this once, how true it is I don't know sorry, but a buddy at work claimed he was 'braking' his right indicator would work, but was VERY dull.. He clamied he just changed all the blubs in that tail light.. If you're despret give it a go, (Not sure if it would work to be honest..)

EDIT - Also, make sure all the fuses that are linked to the lights that you're having issues with have the correct AMP Fuse in em

Thanks for the replies everyone!!! It's got no towbar on it, hasn't had one as far as I know.

The globes are double filaments, maybe I'll try replacing all of them?
How do I fix a bad earth? Can anyone post a diagram or something explaining which wires need cleaning etc?

I don't think it's the brake switch because cruise control works fine.

Swap the globes from one side to the other and see if the problem shifts. Sounds a lot like a faulty brake globe if it only started happening after you replaced the globes (at least I think that's what your first post said - but I could be wrong).

Will give it a shot, it's been doing it in one way or another for a long time though. Maybe I'll just replace the looms..:S

The globes....... double filament only for the brake/park lights.
The blinker and reverse bulbs should be single filament.
I have seen a double filament globe put in the wrong way around which will make one light brighter than the other.

Try and follow the wiring and see if there are any joining connectors which you can pull apart/clean and put back together. (not sure with the sedans)

Normally you can't because the alignment pins on the side of the base of the double filament globes are staggered and not 'equal in line' like a single filament globe.
You can force them in the wrong way sometimes though.
    Worth a check.

Sounds like something I'd do without noticing if I didn't know what I was doing

my bet is the globe isn`t sitting proparly in the bulb socket, resulting in a bad connection. If the globe isnt blown have some one apply the lights while u fiddle with the globe and see what happens then. You may need to get that globe sitting nice and snug, there are ways of doing this, but for you i would reccomend just replacing the socket.

I think they need some more of that grease in there though - the indicators too.

Anyone know what the grease is called / where to get it?

    Haha. VERY common.
It drives me mad how many cars I see on the road with the same problem.

The grease is called Zinc Oxide (white) and Bursons, Repco sell it.
Most of the lubricant companies produce it.

    Glad you fixed it.

Lol, that globe brighter than the other has been like that since I got the car!!!! so stoked to have it fixed.
Also replaced reversing lightings with twin filament globes - heaps brigher and replace the t10 wedge globes on the boot lid, the old ones were raped!

All that's left to do now is wax the car and put tyre shine on

    Not hijacking your thread Nat.
Always was going to ask what grease that was thanks for that.
Do you use that on the door checks aswell?

Yes, I use it on door check straps and the bonnet pin.

Also good for the bottom of ignition modules (DFI) as a heatsink, and on the coil output posts to prevent the posts from corroding in the end of the ignition leads.
